Considering that the flexplate is a balanced piece, shouldn't you be grinding the starter nose instead?

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Very true we could have went that route as well. Hold onto your safety guidelines everyone this is a doozy.. We proceeded to have the truck running while my dad laid under it and ground a bevel to the teeth of the flexplate so it should have a semi spec tolerance to it oppose to pulling it off completely to do so. Still needs a hair removed though. But it did function quote well afterwards.

Here at redneck engineering..

Don't let OSHA find out your "bizness" is operating in such conditions. They might shut down redneck engineering.

Hey I made him wear safety glasses at least I'm glad it didn't go worse and it definitely helped. I gotta look more into it but need a lift to get the best view of it all.

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Hey Dylan, looks great, I've had to trim the nose on a few starters. The manufacturers are using new noses that don't have the clearance for the weights on the flex plate. It was real bad on the 454 in my dually but a little trimming on the nose and it shut right up. A grinder while running now that's scary and I thought I was crazy....

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Haha not claiming its the right way to do it but I'm glad it worked

The balance plates aren't the issue but the teeth are too straight of a cut so they tick the starter nose as it goes round ill have to get a picture

Just pull the starter there will be marks where it's hitting and trim it. No more crazy stuff!!

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Will do

So far she's running very well. Irritated by an exhaust leak on the passenger side and I think I still have some oil dripping but ill need to wash off the back of the block to really find out. She'll get a time up by the weekend with new oil and adjustment

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well new castrol GTX 10-40 in as of Friday night to be rid of the break in fluid with a wix filter to back it all up. That went fairly smooth however I'm Having a major vapor lock issue which stranded me on the freeway at dusk time that really tickled my fancy to be dodging cars in my mirror as I waited for the motor to cool off to get off on the next exit not a fun night at all.

I'm certain the braided steel line I have is compacting and starving the carb for fuel as its too close to the motor so for now does anyone have an idea what part store would carry a heat wrap to help keep the line cool until I can bend up some correct hard line?

Another point was made in that the sock on the filter in my tank could be all clogged up as well causing the starving. So any directions on the best removal of the sender unit to fix that issue? Will also be replacing the rubber line from the tank to the hard line under the cab that should be fun as well.

I completely solved my vapor lock issue with a phenolic spacer for my carb, and my engine runs way better with it also. I re-routed my fuel line which probably helped but in the end the carb was just getting too hot. I used this one, as I have a carter (edelbrock) carb: Amazon.com: Mr. Gasket 3404 Phenolic Insulating... Amazon.com: Mr. Gasket 3404 Phenolic Insulating...

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well now that's interesting never heard if an insulated carb spacer before but I'm already running an aluminum spacer with my setup the last four years. I'm gonna guarantee that the fuel line running from the pump up the front of the block between the serpentine setup is getting too much heat. Ill be getting a sleeve this week and then ill be replacing what I was talking of before for the sender unit and hose since I know that needs to be done at this point. Might as well since I'm not driving it right now

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Alright vapor lock issue seemingly solved we ran a heat sleeve over the braided steel line comin up from the pump to my filter/carb and drive it around for a good 30 minutes last night runnin in traffic, different rpms, freeway, speed run and no stumble at all she's acting just as she should making commuter cars look slow and worn out instead of the other way around

Bad news I'm gonna have to nix my lovely valve covers they're just too terrible of a casting for even permeated to fix as she still leaks like no tomorrow so guess ill have to run the stock center bolt covers until I find the best replacement for them. Really didn't want the look to go away as I loved my old covers but I can't stand that leak nor the burning smell so off they go I guess

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

So far the dist. needs to advance a tooth to get a little more timing out of it. Adjust the carb accordingly, adjust the throttle linkage accordingly, get the lockdown to work properly as its not engaging at all, then add that sweet little 6A MSD box to get her running real good and she should be set. Then I can add on my headers in a bit and my upcoming A/C install. Things are looking up boys

Planning to do my thorley headers in a couple weeks because ill need to pull the motor mounts and have them clearances for the pipes. Shouldn't be too bad

Re: 1972 Chevy p/u NewType Build

Well Vapor lock happened yet again last night so I'm becoming stumped and bummed on this whole situation. so I moved a few lines around again and hopefully it will help currently running two breathers on passenger side and my PVC vale on the other oh guess I should mention I got rid of my leaky as hell perimeter bolt valve covers and now am running the chromie center bolt style ones that came with the new motor this explains the extra hole I have for the second breather.

Tuned the idle down a bit as well so now I can finally hear that cam! She has a gallop to her when warmed up sounds really good never had it before so I'm stoked there. Here's a short video.
