Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

I also did get my motor mount removed, a huge chunk is missing and the rubber isn't even like rubber anymore, it was pretty clear that it needed to be replaced. I searched for weeks with no success and even found a part number from an old parts book but it turns out the mount was discontinued. So my new plan is to rebuild it, I'll melt out all the old rubber and pour in new polyurethane and let it cure, should be much stiffer than the original rubber

Sure tj, it's 3763767. I'm almost 100% positive that it is not reproduced but I would be happy to be proven wrong

I looked at all my special parts places and couldn't find a thing. NO ONE makes them that I can find. I have a few contacts and will try them. Best I could come up with is a used set on Ebay right now and a similar set being produced at $100 a piece and they aren't even Right. The ones I can find being reproduced for that year are different. See picture:

Even the one pictured in Jim Carter parts who specializes in these is different.

Tell me about it lol, when the weight of the engine was on it would get squished outwards and the rubber would rub up against the harmonic balancer making a funny smell

Thanks for taking the time to look tj but like I all ready said I looked for a few weeks hard with no success at all. I talked to a guy that had a '60 and he said that he looked for a year until he got his hands on a nos one. That is why I'm just going to rebuild it

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

So I've been busy lately with work and school starting back up but I've still been working on the truck, just haven't been getting a lot accomplished. Trying to remove the 14 bolts that hold the crossmember in place has proven to be the most difficult thing I have ever done on this truck. The upper control arm was in the way of the nuts so I had to break the balljoints loose (did not come easy). And to add to it each bolt was really rusted on and I don't have a torch to melt them out and an angle grinder or drill wouldn't fit in the tight space so my only option was to heat them up and use penatrant oil and loosen them off with a breaker bar, this took almost an hour per bolt because of how difficult it was to turn. I've so far gotten 8 of them out and only have the bottom ones left. Here is a pic of how the truck currently looks, all the front sheet metal is now off to make the job easier

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Tough work for sure. Left mine in for that very reason. haha Only suspension upgrade I did was a front sway bar. Rest was new upper and lower control arms, ball joints, coil springs, shocks, and steering components. I will say...that front end is STIFF. That and the light motor and sway bar should make this thing corner like a 2016 camaro. lol

Sounds like they built it not thinking about how it would come apart

Yep I did do a couple upgrades as well, front sway bar, polyurethane bushings in place of all old rubber, and the I will install a nice set of shocks all around plus a rear Sway-bar.

Thanks man, trying to build stuff on this truck rather than buy it so I can save money and learn how to do it myself. It definitely will be sweet when done, if the next project is another truck it would probably be another knee knocker Chevy, but I'm kinda thinking the next one will likely be a mopar or some sort of hand built

Thanks Ron, I sure will, I plan to have the entire front end including engine all put together on the truck this fall.

No pics for today but after work I got a little time on the truck and managed to get all the bolts on the crossmember removed, every bolt fought me to the very end but with heat and penatrant oil I had success. Tomorrow if I get a chance I will disconnect the steering linkage and pull the crossmember out

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Forgot to mention the poly bushings and rear sway bar to. haha! Can't wait to see how it improves cornering. As the small truck it was, it handle pretty darn well.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Got busy today after school and disconnected the steering linkage and was able to pull out the crossmember, not a fun job. Now I can start to get the frame prepped for the 78 crossmember.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Got the 78 Crossmember mocked up today, everything is looking good. One thing I wasn't expecting is that the upper control arm is hitting the inner fender, it'll just have to be trimmed

Got all the holes drilled in the side of the frame for the crossmember, the ones with bolts sitting in them are the ones that will be used, the rest now serve no purpose. now all I need to do is the bottom ones

Also made a template out of cart board to mock up my booster and clutch master so I can build a bracket. They both mount in the same location as captainfab's old bracket except mine will mount flush and bolt into the firewall since I need as much room as possible to fit the oil bath air cleaner
