Re: 72 K30 Build

Really need to get the steering and brakes functional as soon as possible, haven’t heard anymore from the flatbed vendor but it could be any time (we’ve only gotten “in 2 weeks” once so far so who knows)!

Plumbing is done (except for the AC refrigerant lines) including the heater core, cluster is installed (1st time) and column mounted. No issues with the heater core, steering/hydroboost, was concerned about the old power steering pump but it seems to be doing great. Started gravity bleeding the brakes and chasing any leaks found.

Jim (JJorgensen52) warned me bleeding the narrow cab & chassis diff is a real treat due to the spring packs being so close to the bleeder screws!

Hoping this works?

Flatbed update; Our salesman checked in with the factory rep, she said it would be finishing this week. He also added it's slated for shipment with some dump trailers to their location soon after.

Re: 72 K30 Build

Booyah, the frame elevator idea worked great on the rear!

Into a 2nd front left caliper now being plagued with sticking problems on this corner. Ha, you can’t hardly tell them apart except the first one has a smaller bleed screw compared to the second one. At least this one does match the larger bleeder style on the right side.

Nice work. But there is something wrong with the Booya pic.

Re: 72 K30 Build

Yeah, that kid looks like he’s got some serious Elvis moves!

Back to the AC system, got it sealed up and holding vacuum pic #3. That is all the rented vacuum pump could muster after running an hour. Last pic #4 is 24 hours later and it didn't budge.

Haven’t installed the tacky tape on the probe yet, want to make sure our old expansion valve works correctly first. We've got a new one but I read somewhere that they don’t really work as well?

Re: 72 K30 Build

The K30 is moving around the shop under its own power and has racked up a tenth on the reset odometer already!

As a friend (quoting Roseanne Roseannadanna) likes to say “it’s always something”!

Pretty sure there is to much oil in the AC system after the initial charge, pressures were off a little bit and it does blow cold just not as cold as I’d like.

For some reason the brake safety switch was not plugged in while getting the brakes up. Yep, the brake light is lit up on the dash every time you apply the brakes. Thinking the combination/proportioning valve is closing off to the rear brakes as they seemed kind of weak.

The 205 shifter’s having trouble going into 4Lo, doesn’t like the carpet/shift boot? location? In addition, the shifter gets all loosie goosy immediately and that just won’t cut it.

For this and the other issues we have to chop you! Ha, been watching to many cooking shows with Mrs. 7dee2.

Ha it’s always something, if it ain’t one thing, it’s another!

Thanks flashed!

Went after the 4x shifter first as I’m trying to get our interior installed. Seems that this one was a real old mistake, all during mockup we used the square body shifter from our donor K35, when I shifted (pun!) to the correct earlier gen shifter everything needed to move forward an inch or so. So, my bad here’s few pics of the high hump fix.

What is it with these shifters? Looks like it was a pain to repair but came out much cleaner looking than my carpet repairs

Re: 72 K30 Build

Thanks Rick, I was thinking of you while cutting the carpet and discovering the opening needed to be moved forward.

Thanks Ryan, it really wasn’t too bad and after all the trouble to convert the truck, fighting the shifter when it’s all done just can’t happen!

Tightened up the linkage (added bushings, wavy washer, etc.) and then some Blue Loctite seems to have done the trick for the pivot bolt backing out problem. 2nd pic is with the shifter all the way back in the 4Hi position.

X2!

I also wish that my seats folded forward more. They don't because mine came from a quad cab and not a standard cab.

Re: 72 K30 Build

Thanks you guys!

With factory seat’s and the tank relocated there is lots of room behind and under, really good spot for this stuff to go! Pretty well hidden and accessible if necessary. Already to install pic just prior to installing the driver’s seat.

Thank you, it sure makes working on stuff easier with the sheet metal out of the way. After everything is sorted (sounds like Edd China ) hanging the body panels will be one of the last things we do.

Thank you, me too! I’ve never had a 67-72 bucket seat truck before and went all in with our C10 and K30 projects. Pretty sure I’m/we’re going to like it a lot as most everything else I’ve owned has been buckets.

Blue has still been carrying on just a bit, had to replace it’s Delco Gold (now discontinued) 42-month battery in the 39th month under the full replacement warranty due to sulfation (yes , free battery!). It flat would not charge over 12.4 volts period no matter what, here’s a link to describe this issue. http://www.batteryweb.com/library/wh...-batteries.cfm

It’s also still having some fuel starvation troubles, thinking winter blend fuel on the hottest day of the year (96 degrees at that time) lots of heat soak (red lights, stop & starts) it just was too much to ask of the old truck. Installed a helper electrical fuel pump for the bad fuel/hot days scenario, if necessary it may become a primary fuel pump if we have anymore issues.
