Ok back to business! Coat #1 done! Using Rustoleum bed coating. I bought the gallon size. So far I like it. I bought a throw away small paint roller kit at Home Depot that had 4 rollers, a pan, and the handle for $4. This product goes on really well and the coverage is very good. Really hard to tell with only one coat on it, but the truth will be once I get better coverage on the whole part.

I have not done the sides yet because I have a lot more sheet metal work to do before I can coat those parts.

Needs a lot more coats, but that is for tomorrow night...

Getting it ready to be a hard worker! Got the original Reese hitch all bolted up tonight. Need to get the wiring completed tomorrow. This is the stuff I really enjoy...

You are right. I had this hitch, and it was the original hitch that came with the truck. That meant that I did not have to drill a bunch of new holes.

Going to put her to work this weekend at the blue ribbon rally show this weekend.

Yes it was super cold here! I bet only 1/4 of the normal attendance showed up. We were all thinking it would get better... NOT! I guess the upside is you could really get a good show parking spot!!

Just poking ya. I'm sure it towed that just fine. Most of those slammed trucks don't have correct alignments, or are hack wagons and I'm sure that's a lot of their issues.

What was interesting was that particular trailer was really heavy. It was a tilt bed, and was a construction trailer used to haul medium heavy equipment, small backhoes, skid steers, and the like. Take a look at the size of the tires, 17 inchers, and they had some heavy duty multi layer tires on them. A friend of mine towed this trailer to our mutual friends house where I picked it up with the Mazda on it, and he was actually concerned that it might not be a good idea. In the end my truck handled it fine, but we were not going to set any speed records...

I think my next step is going to make this hitch a hidden hitch, which should be a fun project. Stay tuned for that in the very near future. In it's current mounting position it is just too low for a bagged truck.

It's not hard- Find a g-body at the PNP for the license bracket. Been running mine since 1995, including a hard rearend hit. Diggin' your truck!

Looks like I get to go parts hunting this weekend! I could not remember the years or body style that had those fold down plate holders, thanks for the idea!

Worked on the tailgate straps tonight. I bought these cable straps off eBay for $10 delivered. So for $5 a side I could not pass it up. The fab was really easy. Simply notch the lower part so it would slip over the bottom bolt that the old strap attached to. Then cut the top of the old strap and weld a 5/16" bolt to it, clean it all up and snap in the new cable straps. It maybe took me 10 minutes a side if that.

I know your going to ask why did I change. Simple the old straps were not long enough. Must have been a model year issue, but they simply were not the right length. So I saw the cable straps on my wife's GMC and figured it would be an easy swap, and it was.

Nice work. I have thought about putting cables on my 72. For what ever reason, the LH side will catch the edge of the box and get hung up. If it were painted, it would really tick me off. I figured the cables wouldn't have that issue. I just haven't gotten to that yet. Haha

Well it drove me nuts because every time I went to put gas in it I had to mess with those old straps. So this made my life easier! I think you are right about them scratching the paint too. You should do this, super cheap and a really easy swap.

What year GMC are those for?

I checked ebay and there are a few of those license plate brackets on there. Also, Matt'sClassic Bowties on here has some chevelle/camaro ones listed on ebay. You could PM him as well. He is a great board vendor to deal with.
