Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I did install my air compressor in the garage today (and my heater rocks in there!)

wired it to run on 120V but noticed it draws 18A, and I have a 15A circuit... ran for about 10 minutes before the breaker flipped, looks like it's time to run a 220V line to the garage now.... ole' betsy may look rough, but 80 gallons of air is AWESOME!

You have a heater now....

How come this thing isn't done yet?! j/k

The only problem I had with those bullit heaters is the smell. Everything you wear gets impregnated with the fumes. Even the propane ones do that, it just takes longer.

Oh, and on your compressor, do not bolt it down to the floor firmly. The vibration can cause the welds at the feet to tank to crack. If you want to clamp it down, put some rubber pads under the feet.

this heater doesn't smell that bad, it's a multi-fuel unit so I run kerosene since jetA is a little pricey!

Good tip on the compressor, I was going to look for some rubber spacers but forgot. I have some space to lift it up and drop them on so that will be in order.

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I need to do the same thing myself. Had to drive to SC to get it but I got a great deal when I bought my 80 gallon air compressor off a guy on Craigslist. But I still have yet to bolt it to the floor and I'll make sure I use a rubber pad to buffer the vibrations.

Ran external conduit for the 220v myself and it was a lot easier than I thought. Couldn't imagine doing my rebuild without this big son of a gun.

She may be ugly, but those old compressors are dependable and if you are luckily -cheap. Good score Mike.

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

got old Betsy wired for 220v 20 amp today. Easier than I thought, like you said. Ran a new 20amp breaker from the basement and put in a 20 amp dual pole light switch so that I can turn the power off.

She kicks on at 100 psi and off at 135 right now, that should be good for me. When it's running I can run the die grinder at 80 psi and the main pressure gauge barely moves!!! I loosened the floor bolts today while she was running and the vibrations didn't changed. I might find some rubber but to be honest, this thing is 50 years old and still running...is it really going to matter?

thanks for the offer dammitmitchell, i'll hold off right now. I might snag some pieces of the kids floor puzzle when I get a chance... I'm 6'3" @ 250lbs and I can barely move the beast!

still no truck update, but I did get the x-mas lights down and managed not to die inside my house breaker panel!

that compressor definitely has a character, I like it.

I would also suggest to fab up belt guard for it.

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Character is a good description!

a belt guard would be nice, since it's tucked in the corner nobody should accidently walk into it, but I can see some fingers or clothing getting caught if not careful...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

well, I was hoping for the powdercoaters on the rad support today, but didn't make it that far. My metal shop at work had a berillium incident and had to seal the doors. I was planning to use the shear and metal brake but had to resort to a clamp and hammer to bend some steal. Last of the rot on the lower portion of the rad support, I plan on grinding tomorrow and seeing if the PC guy is open. If not then Monday...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

true, if I hadn't replaced it though it would have driven me nuts! Would have been nice to use the brake, but it's not a sharp 90 degree curve anyway...

Is there supposed to be a drain hole under the radiator?

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

made some progress today...

radiator support is pretty much ready for the powder coaters tomorrow.. Had some rust area that needed fixed, also had to weld in some nuts for the lower pan, the lower pan also had some rust... It's not a perfect fix but should barely be noticeable once coated...

SHould I PC the lower pan or rhino line it? I'm thinking of using the Raptor liner on any metal facing the ground (front pan, inner front and rear fenders, under cab, bottoms of bed sides)

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I'm always afraid to grind to much metal away so i'll leave it as is...

Had to mount it up to the truck just for a glance of hat she use to look like..

Welded in the lower 4-core mounts and sat a grille in place. I doubt that i'll be using this grille now that Seacrow sent me a perfect grille from FL. I might plate this area near the left mount though, rust took it's toll back in the day...

Off to the Powder House tomorrow...rad support, air cleaner, battery mount, hood latch and support, washer bottle and upper radiator pipe...
