I had used a wood block as a spacer for the front inner seat mount for the driver side. I pulled out the plastic trim parts for the seat mounts from when I bought it and found that the cover for that mount was not going to work with a wood block, so I made a nice one. I started with a piece of tube from a parted out steering column, used my new metal band saw and cut a 1-1/2" piece. Then tack welded a fender washer to one end where it rests on the carpet. In place... With the cover... The other front mounts bolt direct to the floor. The rear mounts have about 1/2" of plastic spacers to level the seat out a bit. It's all bolted in and I even got the passenger side sill plate on. A few more minutes later tonight and I'll get the driver side in. I need to pick out some floor mats yet and get the seat belts, and that will finish the floor. Once the seat gets recovered to match the rest of the interior I'll spray the mounts turquoise to match the other plastic/vinyl in the cab. Punch list: Polish other wheels heater box adjust e-brake cable eustations to match panels horn inner fenders (need new nuts, paint bolts) Cowl shims Washer pump finish exhaust upholstory recovered alignment

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Went for a ride today with the carpet and extra insulation. Wow, what a difference. The cab is tight enough that having a vent window open a bit helps the doors close. I have a door jamb vent I pulled from another truck and I'm thinking about installing it on the passenger side. Is it worth the effort and the risk I mess the hole up and have to fix a mistake?
The decibal levels are definitely better and it just has a different feel to it compared to the all steel interior top to bottom. I still need to move the mufflers back to under the bed though. I think I'm going to work on getting the heater installed next. Not that I really need it, but it needs to go in before the inner fenders and I want to finish routing the wiring for the EFI, etc.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got all of the interior soft parts cleaned up and sprayed except the seat bracket covers and dash pad. At least for now the stuff will all match up pretty good. I'm not thrilled with the arm rest and visor color but can get those covered with the seat when that is done. The mirror is in, the rest I'll let cure some and reinstall later today.
The stuff is pretty easy to use. I cleaned everything with soapy water, let dry over night, then cleaned again with my summit wax remover/degreaser just like I was painting a fender. Then just sprayed a couple coats on the parts, with about 10 min between coats. It dries fast and covers well.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got the stuff put back in, except for the door crank eustacions. I think I have to pull the door panels off to install those. And since my brand new driver side door handle busted and needs replaced, I'll be doing that soon enough anyway. I think they look pretty good installed, nice match to the paint.
I took the wife for a ride tonight as the sun was setting. Topped out at 105+ before she said thats enough (it was still climbing), but it's so smooth you feel like you can cruise it right there. She's impressed with how it all feels now with the added insulation and carpet. Still have a few things to work on over the winter, but my list keeps getting shorter. I think I'll do the heater box next so I can get the inner fenders out of the basement.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
It's a 1969 Turquoise Poly, paint code 511. This was medium green before and if you saw them together it's obvious how different they are. This is more blue than green.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Not really a build update, but worth posting. My mom came down for Thanksgiving and it's the first time she got to see my (nearly) finished truck in person. She was amazed and said that my dad would have loved it. He died about 6 years ago and for many years didn't understand my love for his old truck. My mom said that after a while he did come around and thought it was a worthwhile project. He never got to see how it turned out, but a piece of him is in every part of this build. All that I have learned, the roots of my passion for things mechanical began with his influence on me. My life has been built on those beginnings.
Anyway, this morning before she was going to head home, I took her for a ride. She loved it. It's entirely possible that she hadn't been in it since the late 70's. From then on we had a 2nd car and the only time we used the truck was for hauling wood and garbage, etc. By that time I was old enough to help my dad with these chores and she just would not have been in it. She said it brought back a lot of memories and one I had yesterday was of my whole family from back then stuffed into the cab. My parents, me and both sisters, and thought I should try and recreate that.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Thanks for the kind words. On another front, I am a die cast collector of these trucks, and also have a few models. Last winter I built one of them to match what my truck would look like. I had it pretty well wrapped up except the wheels. I had a hell of a time finding 1/24-1/25 scale cyclone/turbo/huricane wheels to match mine. Yesterday I was at a Hobby Lobby store and scanned the pics on the model boxes and found this...
Got the wheels on, but wasn't a direct fit. Different manufacturers of models and different sizes of tires/wheels means I couldn't just slip those wheels into the tires from the original kit. Mounting was different, etc. but I got them on it eventually. I got the grill bowtie painted and installed and also the door mirror. So here is the comparison with a shot of the real truck.

Great work on the model!!! Now you just need to polish up the rest of the wheels on the real thing

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Would you like some cheese with that whine??? Ouch! That one hurts!!! (the truth always hurts the worst) I have had to switch gears from working on the truck to working on parts to sell to pay the bills. My part time/independent contractor work (main source of income for the last year) has slowed to next to nil with the holidays...combine that with having one of those places owing me $2,400 in commission....and I've been having to provide for the family with the restoration and sale of truck parts..... I have found some great deals on the last main parts needed for it and have the tailgate for it at the body shop being worked on by someone 10,000 times more qualified than me to work on it

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I guess I should have sanded the side molding and emblems off too. I'll need a different tailgate also, and I'll have to find a 99 or so truck model with a split bench, and.. oh hell, it's close enough.
