Oh boy..... Want to hear a story?

Back in the early 80's, Detroit Diesel was starting to see that their 2 stroke 53, 71, and 92 series diesels were going to have problems meeting emissions standards in coming years. DDEC technology helped to a point, but the long-term solution would be a new family of 4 stroke diesels. Detroit was loosing market share as well, and GM was looking for a partner for Detroit to help develop new engines and potentially increase sales. Enter John Deere. From what I understand, Deere helped with the development of the 60 Series and was going to supply mid-range diesels to GM for Chevy and GMC medium duty trucks. A very limited number of Deere diesels were installed in GM medium trucks sometime around 1986, and the 1990 Kodiak and Topkick were being designed to use Deere diesels as well. Deere was to use the 60 Series in their largest tractors and construction machinery.

The 60 Series went on sale in late 1986, and eventually became the most popular heavy duty diesel by the late 1990's. The Deere partnership, for some unknown reason, never got off the ground. After the handful of Deere powered GM mediums were built the option was dropped and the 1990 Kodiak and Topkick were introduced in late 1989 with the new Caterpillar 3116 diesel.

Too bad it didn't work out, I think it could have been beneficial to both GM and Deere.

I think the idea was the Deere would eventually replace the 8.2L.. Our fleet had a few 8.2L's too. The were down on power but did deliver fantastic fuel economy. The turbo'ed versions were notorious for blowing head gaskets.

Re: GM Semis

looking at those classic fotos make me think , if someone had the foresight to store a bunch of those cars back when they cost about 700 bucks new like in an arizona cave or some other place dry and without rodents they would make a killing selling those all original low milage cars for 10 times as mush now sixty years later

recently seen some pictures of a toyota cardealership in the demilitarized zone between eeeh think it was turkey and greece there where cars left there new in 1973 , there still rusted because the garage they where stored in had a leaking roof but their interiours where still looking new

Re: GM Semis

Here is a video showing the '60 Chevy cars being built at the factory. Although just a quick shot, there is a '60 Chevy Medium towards the end of it:

Re: GM Semis

Great shot of Global trucks.

I wonder how drivers felt about Cab-Overs back then, Flat Nose anyway. I was always a Conventional fan and would be fighting to get into one, lol.

Luckily all the trucks at the company I drove for had Conventionals.

The only time I really didn't mind one, or the like, was when I drove some Old Look and New Look Buses.

Re: GM Semis

I like dressed fleet trucks. Two great examples. Not just owner/operators leasing out, I always thought it was cool to see any employee do a company vehicle.

I got the idea to start stashing any 65-72 GM 2dr hardtop by the late '80s when repro parts became widely available, clones were being built, attention was being turned to model years overlooked before, and cars were still cheap. If I had a huge cheap warehouse*...

* I was thinking "barn" back then.
