Pretty simple maple sap is between 2 and 4% sugar. When you boil it down (evaporation) you concentrate the sugar. Takes on average 30 to 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Your also concentrating the maple taste. Going to try birch and black walnut next year

Thanks, I had no idea it took so much to make a small amount. That explains why the real syrup is expensive.

Yeah, like people used to think that I just walked out in the woods and picked up corral poles already cut to 16.5' and 4" diameter on both ends with all the limbs trimmed off neatly - just FREE not forest service lease or anything...

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Daughters boyfriend came over with a problem. His security lug nuts were stuck and he had broken the “key” tool in one of them. His tires are super bad and getting new ones tomorrow but no tire shop wants to tackle getting the security lugs off.

Welded nuts to the end of each of them and spun them off. One other lug nut was messed up by another tire shop so I drove a deep well impact socket on that one and spun it off. He had a new set of all lug nuts so we installed those before he left.

That deep socket trick is a real eye-opener when someone comes in to have a tire changed, without the key. Hammer that socket on (we had a split one that worked great for this) and spin the "locknut" off. McGard's? What McGards?

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

I once bought a rear end from a junkyard and the rims had security lug nuts on them. The guy grabbed a torch and I had to stop him. I don't want it if you're going to melt the damn thing. Just leave the rims on dude.

This has got to smell amazing. I'd probably eat a dozen pancakes and four or five waffles per day while that process was going on.

And I wondered about that, if you could use the sap from other trees. I'll be interested to hear how that turns out next year. The only option I have is a single birch with an 8 inch trunk, haha. Could probably only get a tablespoon out of it and boil it down to 1/8 of a teaspoon to get a taste.

Nah.... after decades of stomping around outdoors, I have a pretty good idea what poison oak looks like!

Did I mention I hate that stuff?

It’s at 115 so I’ll be finishing it off on the stovetop in a large SS pot . Just thought ya might like to see the funnel . It’s an old photo flash cone works great . Filter is a cheap new T-shirt works as well as the pricey syrup filters and only cost 2 bucks at wallyworld

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...

Spent a good bit of the afternoon working on the quarter panel and fender flare on my dad's 66. Also drove it around for the first time in about 8 months.
