Re: 72 k20 project

me too! i stopped by the body shop today and it has been sanded. i think he said he was going for another coat of primer and sand then paint. it looked good to me with all of the filler covered up. i dont really need the cab at home yet since i am going to slow, but i guess it is good for motivation.

Re: 72 k20 project

Last night a good friend of mine helped me set up my front gearset. this is something i've done only a few times. considering i want to run drive flanges and have the gearset spinning all the time, i chose to ask the help of someone who has 100s of rebuilds under his belt with no issues.

i got it back home and made it (mostly)black. paint skillz keep getting better

you can see that i put in 3.54s and this axle had a lock right that has been replaced by differential gears. i chuckled at the fact that i was removing a locker and installing a higher gear. the complete opposite of most custom axle builds. haha

the diff cover is being painted and i will install that after some dry time. i need install seals in the hubs and go to town reassembling

Coming along nicely. If you would have painted it pink those bare spots would have been easier to spot. I'm just saying. I noticed the pink rake on the wall.

It also looks like plenty of insurance grease was used everywhere friction can occur... smart fella, that buddy of yours.

ha, a pink axle would have clashed with the green paint... in my own defense, the rake was red, the desert sun has turned it pink!

he certainly is. lubriplate 105, always have a tube around. in fact, i had to buy a new one recently for all the re-assembly going on. the axle will sit with no grease in it for a while, so the super dope job was a good thing.

Looking real good. What are you spraying on the axles for black paint? I tried some tremclad at first and had rust bleed in only a year sitting in the garage.

Thanks!

its just rustoleum enamel. normal stuff from a plain white can. where i live, it could go a thousand years with no paint and still only have surface rust. i would have considered heavier coating, possibly even PCing if i still lived in the rust belt.

Thanks! i got some black on it, im sure i missed it somewhere else though... flash photography will expose my inadequacies later i am sure. its semi gloss, so far anything black on this truck has been. just a little more shine than flat, but not full out! No gloss in this joint!

Re: 72 k20 project

Have two Pete! i got some more done today.

paint was dry enough to assemble.

ran a tap through the threads to get the last of the dirt that was leftover.

put the kingpins back together and installed the steering arm with ARP studs and fresh nuts. it looks like i missed a lot of paint, but its the strap reflecting off the black.

you can see the fresh stover nuts on the spindles. i have never heard of any news headlines caused by reusing mechanical style lock nuts, but i got a bag of 50 for less than ten bucks so i replaced them.

also intstalled the hubs with the fresh studs. havent decided what i am doing for brake rotors yet and i need to clean and paint the abutments before i install them anyway so i left them all off. you can see the bolt in the bracket that holds the abutment. in order to keep the best thread engagement i installed them first so i would not need to make them shorter in order to install while the bracket is bolted to the knuckle.

put the cover on temporarily for now. i think i will order a lubelocker gasket for it. used button head bolts, since, because. i think i will order new lower and upper kingpin cap bolts. i need to order my new lower pin plates and install them as well.

i commited to the plan and drilled my knuckles. i stole the tie rod from the other axle and put it on so it will roll somewhat. i need to order the tie rod ends and tube to put the correct tie rod on this one and put this one back on the other axle before it dissapears

Re: 72 k20 project

Some more tidbits of fun.

a hone job

then a wash

nice and clean, back on the stand. oiled the bores and the mains. hope to drop the pistons back in soon.

made up a filter mount bracket. now i just have to figure out if i can get it mounted the way i want and have space for the plumbing. not positive how i am going to deal with that just yet.

and then...

Re: 72 k20 project

Todays progress.

got the crank washed and rolled the new shells in. crank back in and mains torqued. spins like a top.

we also got the new rings in the pistons and re-assembled the pistons and rods. hope to slide them back in the holes tomorrow. i ordered a set of studs for the head that have arrived as well. as long as the head checks out, i should have all the needed parts for the engine. after some talking i think we are going to send the pump to a friend of my buddy Sean's. Sean is a bosch pump guy but lacks all the fancy tools his buddy has. so for a nominal fee, the pump will get the dope treatment. i need to start working on my oil pan soon as well
