He had a sawmill too, and we would take the pickup up to the woods just to cut, and then take the truck to the woods to skid and load. He had a Model A doodlebug skidder and another Model A turned backwards with a tractor front loader mounted on it.

Of course I have no pictures because that was back in the film & develop days, and besides never imagined that it would be interesting 45 years later.

I had to look up what a doodlebug was... pretty damn cool, what they did back in the day!

Yeah, he had torched the frame off and thrown away the rear springs, using the cut off piece of frame as a spacer between the axle and frame. Then it had an arch sort of like a tow truck and a PTO winch right behind the seat. There was no cab, just the front end and fenders.

I would ride shotgun and bail out before he turned around, and get him backed in and pull the cable and set the choker(s). Then back to the meadow we used for a landing and jump out and unhook and run up and jump on board again. It was a lot of fun to be getting paid for

RIP Bill Manuel Sr.

I started a picture thread in General Disco for Doodlebugs back a while. I'll try to find it

Got to post a picture of something or other. That was a nice F250 4wd. Gotta say 4wd since Ford gives no designation between models Bumpsides:

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

It’s funny some 3/4t bumpsides and dentsides made use of the 1/2t Spicer hubs seen on K10s, K5s, and Broncos. Ford had two front axle options for 3/4t 4wds back in the day. The stouter version used the Spicer hubs we see on GM 3/4t.

Funny how those old Fords came "lifted" from the factory and back then everyone made fun of them because they were so tall

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

I never heard the making fun for being so tall, but I know in that era mfgrs were going more toward "lower entry height" in their 4wds. My '69 Dodge was divorce case as well and it didn't sit near as high as an F250 4wd. I always said the Fords looked like 4wd was an afterthought, like the truck wasn't designed for 4wd originally. but I liked big tires so it was me wanting my Dodge to sit like a Ford. Then my GMs, once I figured out the truck with best part support and availability wins. That truck Deadhead NM showed is lifted

For a year I drove a Loadstar school bus with 345 & 5 speed. I thought those were pretty nice trucks. Lots of low end, you could get out of some slippery spots by starting in 3rd gear.

I like the IHs. I would like to have one or more now. I like the '72 era 4wds in the same way as GMs. I only went with 71/72 GMs for ease of service. I had vehicles, including the '69 W200, that were tough to get parts for and that is the reputation IH had by what I heard. I love the no BS/all truck design of IHs. Pickups and SUVs were their lightest line of vehicles, same as GMC.

Yeah, that's what my stepdad had: 1971 3/4 ton 4x4 with 345 and 4 speed. I should have bought it in the 1990s but I was in the middle of going back to college mid-life.

I knew another logger in CO that had a 1950-something 2 ton IH. He needed a new clutch and at the parts store they asked him "is that an early, mid, or late 1956?"

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

Yeah, you had to order parts by the build sheet. Had to know which plant the trucks was built in and the date. So you can imagine you would need a good parts person for any of that to mean anything. Different jobbers supplied different plants at different times, Funny thing now is that is how it is with GMs and the others now. That's why you need to give a VIN. They say parts source when truck starts on the line could change before it gets to the other end.

Now that I have attention for Internationals here...

You think a 67-72 GM SWB 4wd is a low production hot little number? Well you are right. So you like your trucks smaller and on the more rare side? Me too, and that's why I say "GIVE ME THIS ONE!!!!" This truck is over the top toodamncool!

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

Come to think of it, before now I don't think I've ever seen a short bed IH pickup (2wd or 4wd).

That sort of looks like a Scout II with a pickup cab top, without any size reference.

It seems the only ones I saw were Stepsides, or whatever it was IH called them. That short bed 4wd is a rare sight. It seems IHs were bought for the heavy uses, mostly. A real truck for sure. But that li'l humdinger is an 8-lug full-floater!

The Terras they came out with in their final years of light truck production were about the same thing as a SWB, but with top swap abilities like a Blazer

I had never seen or heard of one of those before!

1975 was the last year for light vehicles, right?

The first generation Scouts were all over the place in Colorado in the 1970s, along with the Toyota LC. As they say, you couldn't throw a cat without hitting one

I believe '78 was the last year. I think their proper name was Scout Terra. They were their Tahoe, between Scout and Travelall. Have you ever seen a rare 3dr Travelall? They're as rare as a 4dr 67-72 Suburban

Did someone say Travelall?

You know IH did panel trucks too, right? You could get them 1/2 Travelall and half panels, too

Goodness, you found a lot of them. I didn't know about the panels, I don't think I ever saw one.

For some reason I like those "wide mouth" IH pickups of the 1960s.

That style is almost modern again. Put a chintsy plastic bumper on it and it would fit right in 2021

I dunno 'bout that. I think you would also need to fit in some sort of little halo lights around the headlights. The modern man gets excited over such things
Which one are you calling wide mouth, the late '50s/early '60s style? I like how the changed the truck all around the grille from the mid-'50s style. If you mean the next wider grille, I guess I see those as wide eyed
