Thats in my new project, 68 GMC shortbed stepside. It was going to be a stickshift.

On another note, talked to a friend of mine who owns a shop and has a few hotrods around. He asked what year engine it was? He mentioned that once you figure out the year, then get the starter and flywheel for that year engine and stay away from Kragen/O'Reily starters. I know your from LA, Rotex is on 140th and Western Ave right before Rosecranse. I would get one from them once you know what you have. The 350 in my garage, when I ran the numbers for engine size, it comes up a 327/350, either or.

Re: SoCal checkin' in

I usually go to a starter place in Compton to rebuild my starters. They're pretty good, but I may have to try this place you're talking about. I'm not too far I'm on 49 and western. Def gonna check it out. Oh yeah good news today, I worked on my truck during lunch before I called the tow truck to come pick it up. And pretty much gave up after lunch but half an hour before I got out of work I decided to give it one last try

Re: SoCal checkin' in

I turned the flywheel manually to several different locations and tried the starter till finally it grabbed enough to start my truck! So I drove it to la no tow truck needed!! Felt good to get it back home without a tow. I pride myself in almost always getting my cars/trucks home under their own power!!!!

I know the block numbers are located on top behind the drivers side head, any other spots I can look for the numbers on the block

Congrats on getting it running back on its own power. Driver side behind the head is the only spot. If your engine is not up against the firewall, you can look down and use a flashlight to see the numbers.
The pic is not the best example cause the heads are removed.
Also, the engine in my garage is another 327, not a 350.

Re: SoCal checkin' in

So here's the victim. Left work and came to my parents house and pulled the tranny. Fluid smells bad! The guy I was getting the tranny from sold it before o picked it up so I'm still looking for one ,gotta get a new flywheel tomorrow too. Then see whats up with the starter. The flywheel is worn pretty good on the starter side. Hope I fix this problem

Re: SoCal checkin' in

Was the starter disengaging after you would start the truck? If it doesn't disengage completely, then the starter cog will run along the fly wheel and wear both out.

Thanks vdog looks like the first is prob right.I always say 75 350 so I guess I was right with the info I was given. I got the tranny from the olds in ,driveshaft mounted, just have a few things to finish off and keep my fingers crossed that its a good tranny. I'll finish it up in the morning. I'm pretty beat!

Post Re Starter (not) Fun

How many teeth are on the starter's Bendix ? .

Once in a while you'll get an odd tooth count and this causes jamming & binding .

Dano , you said oil droplets all over the back of the cab , that's not likely rings as rings woud spew oil & smoke out the exhaust pipe , not from under the cab....

I'm just thinking out loud here , maybe you blew a rear main seal or oil filter plate seal ? .
