I hear ya Dale...would be nice if we all had 2nd chances...

Jesse...the bugs are already out...bout a hundred or so of em gave their lives in the epoxy...gonna scuff those out tomorrow and spray the high build....the epoxy says I've got a 3 day window without scuffing...so I hope this works out all right...I'm gonna paint it indoors...I'm working towards a temporary paint booth

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well what I thought was gonna be high build day turned into another day of epoxy...once I got it all back in the shop and got a light close to it, the epoxy had a leathery look to it...I tried red scotchbrite and 180g and it wouldnt cut it..so it hit it with 80g again...so I sprayed 2 more coats of epoxy on it...supposed to storm tonite and sun...maybe mon I can get the high build on it....
I dont know why I'm getting that leather look in the epoxy...its done that before but I dont know what I'm doing wrong...I made sure everthing was tight...the net said it happens from air getting in the fluid chamber thru loose fittings..

Looking forward to more progress pics. Saw this story and thought of you- I know it’s a lot older than yours, but it’s a good story. I like all the bags, even stacked on the roof

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Just as I suspected...after sanding the high build I get to spray it again with more high build..yeehaw..
I had sanded all the fenders with guide coat and used a durablock...but when I switched to the plexiglass sanding backers, it really showed how bad my work had been..on the 4 fenders I had about a dozen low spots show up and cut thru the high build into the epoxy in several places...most low spots would have filled with some more high build ,but I had 3or4 spots I didn't think the high build would fill properly..so I went ahead and scuffed all the lows with 80g and skimmed on some metalglaze... got that blocked down and now all fenders look good...will spray on another coat or 2 of high build tommorrow and those should be done..
Also got the tailgate in some more epoxy ,,after my last round of sanding exposed alot of bare metal..it looks good now so I'll hit it with high build tomorrow as well..the epoxy has a 3 day recoat window with no sanding..so I'm just gonna spray right on the epoxy without scuffing...
Now to get the bed ready for paint..
Heres the tailgate...I feel so fortunate to have a near blemish free tailgate..I was told it was taken off the truck when new and stored in a barn for many yrs...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Spent all day spraying high build...4 fenders, 1 tailgate, 2 running boards, and 1 bed...all in high build now for the last time...(fingers crossed)...I'm gonna start out with 220g and follow up with 320g...I'm on the fence as wether to do 400g before paint....the paint store man said 320g was fine...everybody else says 400g...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Not much done today...after bushogging, piling brush, and running some errands for the socially distanced folks, I got a late start...so I sanded on the tailagte,....and the persistent low spots started showing,....again.... so I hit it all with 180g and sprayed a few more coats of high build on it....I think some of the high/low on it is from the stamping of the metal..there was alot of moving metal going on when they punched it out....however it turns out this time will have to do...but it think itll be ok..
Rear fenders are good to go...will spend some time tonite sanding on the bed

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

You want to be sanding your final primer before paint with something much finer than 320. 400 would be what I would consider the roughest, at least a "once over" with some 500 would be a good idea. Lorne

Thanks haulin....I've got plenty of paper....that's no issue...just going by (320g) what the paint store man told me...the paperwork says 400-600g...and I've got plenty....

I use 500 for solid color and 600 for metallic. If you still need to spray sealer, the grit number is a bit more forgiving. Panels are looking good!

Thanks Robert..!!...there again the guy at SW said I dont need sealer...even though the primer is the lighter gray and the paint is dark red...hes adamant about it...talked to him several times about using sealer..the paint is solid color single stage...no metallic..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Thanks Robert...the parts that I already painted red with the flattner added turned out ok, without using a sealer...no coverage issues anywhere.....so I'll proceed on to paint once I get done sanding...thanks again
