Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I went back to the junkyard and picked up my 88-89 headlight upgrade/downgrade. I saw them yesterday when I was getting my repair parts. Cost me $30.

New gm mini 337-1022 starter and a manual oil pressure gauge.
30 psi idle good enough for 160k sbc as the dash says 15psi and drops to zero hot idle.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I disassembled the headlights so I can clean everything up and repaint the rings and buckets black. I saw someone had changed the headlights and didn't put the rings on right, and I also noticed one side had the buckets reversed.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I'm trying two different rust treatments on the buckets, both are very old. I've had them a long time. They might not even be good anymore.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get the dang 02 sensor off. Tried every trick I know, heat and quench, pipe over a socket, breaker bar, 02 socket amd 02 crows foot socket, jack under end of breaker bar, etc.
Came to the conclusion that what I really need is to get it on the air so I can pull down on a breaker bar and get 90-150 degrees of movement instead of only 45ish but since no lift, no can do. Will have to take it to a shop unfortunately. It does drive better with the 02 unplugged so that gives me hope that the 02 was failed all along. Last week I installed the amps and iDQ sub, for about 2 weeks in march I had it completely apart installing new carpet and color matching all the trim plastics to Lt neutral and deleting 30 years worth of PO add on wiring.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
So after it sitting for almost three weeks, I've started trying to figure out what's wrong with the 99 again. I had cleared the codes, when I do that it runs pretty well until it sets the codes again. The codes are P0339 and the problem should revolve around that as the other is P0341 which is said to trigger because of the P0339. When they set it runs awful, misfiring and lack of power. I hooked a voltmeter to the crank signal wire and it's working fine right now, steady at about 6 volts. Hasn't set the codes again yet, I guess I'll have to drive it around some more. It also cranks slow when starting, like it may have jumped time. I might end up pulling the timing cover to inspect, after I get it to run rough again.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I worked on cleaning up the headlight buckets. I think it's interesting that all four are different, not just lefts and rights. At first I wasn't too impressed with the treatments I used. I wire brushed them as clean as I could then hit them with a third treatment I had. That one seemed good, it was burning my hands while I was using it. Maybe next time I'll use gloves. Then I noticed the naval jelly removed the paint too, I don't know why I didn't see it sooner. I'm thinking about stripping the other three also but I don't think it's really going to matter.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I sprayed the buckets. Ran out of paint. Will have to get more for the rings and I want to put another coat on the face of the buckets.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I stripped and painted the rings. Next is the screws and springs. Everything else is plastic and stainless steel so they will just need a good cleaning.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I cleaned and dipped the screws but I have the springs submerged. I'm not sure how long I should leave them in there, you can see it dissolving the rust.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I painted the screws and springs and gave the buckets another coat. I'll let everything dry until Saturday and reassemble then.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
Since my tire carrier was originally mounted sideways on a van door and I modified it to up and down, it isn't as strong and has started to sag. The tire rubs on it which weakens the sidewall. I bent it back up and added a brace. I also spaced the tire out more for more clearance. I'll have to modify the lock because it doesn't fit anymore since I changed the spacing.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
I started reassembly of the headlights with some difficulty. The buckets I thought were backwards weren't, they were that way because the headlights have a little tab for some reason and it interferes with the screw side. Having the screws on that side makes changing the low beam headlight more difficult as the screws are beneath a plastic piece when positioned that way. I decided to cut off the tab for the two headlights. Not too bad for the new low beam, the tab is metal, but the old high beams which I'm reusing the tab is glass. A cutoff wheel on my Dremel took off the metal one and I also used it to score the glass one and snapped it off then smoothed it. You can see the glass tab I didn't remove on the bottom lower right side.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
Got my Center caps in for Old School Shoes.
I went pretty short on the fronts, since I am running spikes I did not want a bulky cap...

Headlight swap is done. I can already tell they're brighter. Working on the tire carrier so I can get it back on.

The a/c compressor on the 99 locked up and broke the serpentine belt.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
The bushings on my rear shocks were completely shot. The shocks were rattling and squeaking, so I replaced the bushings.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
Looks like I'll be going to the junkyard tomorrow. My van started shifting weird a week or so ago, and today when I pulled into my driveway the transmission started grinding. Still works, but doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence. I'll also have to try harder to fix the 99 now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??
That's a real bummer. Good luck at the wrecking yard tomorrow.
I pulled the front suspension apart on my '89 K1500 this evening. Discovered I need new CV shafts and hubs. The cost of this rebuild just doubled. There are two sizes of upper control arm bushings listed. One is 41mm and the other is 43mm with no apparent way to tell ahead of time. I ordered the wrong size, of course, so I had to go buy a set of the 41mm bushings. |
