Last night I rebuilt my TBI. This would have been an easy job that should have taken 20-25 minutes if it had not been for the fuel supply and return hard lines. The actual rebuild only took like 20 minutes, but getting those hard lines back on was a super big pain. However I did get them back in. It is always one bolt or something that should be simple that keeps a task from being done quickly. Patience is a virtue!

Got the second coat of bed liner on this evening. Getting the truck ready for C10's in the park next weekend. I have a decent list to get done before we go, but none of them is really big. Better get back to work!

So I took the truck out today for a shake down run before we head Friday to Dallas for the C10's in the park. Before I left I topped off the tank to get an accurate miles per gallon reading Here were the stats: Drove 35.26 miles, and then filled the tank with 3.466 gallons, which equated to 10.17 miles per gallon. Better than I thought it was going to do... Most of the time I was doing 75 mph. So for an old big block that is not too bad, was expecting 8 miles per gallon, but was happy to get this result.

I was around 8mpg's before my rebuild. 8mpg's after. If you're getting 10mpg, that's a good thing. A 4l80e is always on my search list until mine finds a new home. For reference.... I picked up some parts for my 'new' 99 CC SWB. During the drive there/back from the wrecking yard I maintained 65mph @ just under 3K rpm. Once we got my 99 back together & took it for a test drive, we were buzzing 80mph down the highway @ 2500prms.

Thanks for all the detail on the Vvivid Vvinyl saga. I'm pretty intrigued. Have a good safe trip to C10s ITP.

Sorry the truck had issues with the rear end. Haven't torn it apart yet, but it sounds like the ring and pinion need to be replaced.

And that is exactly what would have happened! I would have been in the middle of nowhere (and for those of you not from Texas we have a lot of no where between Lubbock and Dallas!) with it broken down and nobody around but me and the coyotes!

I told myself even if something happened and I couldn't take my truck to c10s I would just drive my jeep and park outside. Fortunately it all worked out. I wouldn't have chanced the rearend either.

It has been quite a long time since I posted anything on my dually. As some of you know I have been working on my 68 GMC to a Tahoe chassis project for the past couple of months. However I do have some good news to report! I will be doing a Cummins swap in the early spring. A friend had a guy back out on a 5.9 12V he was selling. I went and took a look at it before Thanksgiving and we struck a deal on it.

The engine is going to come with a recently rebuilt 46RE transmission, now I do not plan on using this unit, but I do want a NV4500 at a minimum. So if you are interested in a great deal on a 46RE then shoot me a message.

I have been wanting to do this swap for a long time. I will not start on it until we get back from LST because all of my spare time will be getting the GMC done for that show, and I will need the dually to pull it down there.

So stay tuned this will be fun!

Very nice! You won't regret that! Which trans is it? 47rh or re? 2wd or 4wd? If it's a 47RH 2wd, I'd be interested in it. They never had 46s behind a diesel. 94 and 95 are RH, 96 up are RE.

Ryan,

Here is a pic of the actual transmission. The only reason for the fluid on the outside of this unit was due to an oil line on the engine that was leaking and blowing back on the transmission. It will be cleaned up when it gets back to my shop.

Because I am not a Dodge transmission expert you guys are going to have to help me nail the exact model down. Is this an RH or an RE? I just don't know what this dude really is because I know GM transmissions not Dodge's. I do know that it has a recent rebuild and that there is not that many miles on it. That is all I know for sure.

How many pins are there in the VB connector? The yellow one behind the gear selector and throttle valve levers. If it is 3 it is a RH. If 7 or 8 it's an RE. If it has 2, it's an A518. It looks like a RH to me by the looks of the OD housing and levers.

Are you dead set on a 5 speed? That trans would be perfect for great mileage and easier to fit in a slammed truck too compared to a NV4500.

Hopefully the line you're speaking of that is blowing back on the trans is not the breather/blow by tube. The top of the trans sure looks dry and clean....

I remember it being a 3 pin. I will double check on it when I get it back to the shop this weekend.

No I'm not dead set on a 5 speed, and I think you make a great point on the fitment issue too. Who knows maybe it will be the best option in the long run. How reliable are the RH transmissions? I know if you control the heat and keep them cool then you should not have issues, but what typically goes on these?

Typically, the stock torque converter starts to slip, that with low line pressure and plastic servos, and weak band anchor and strut, something usually breaks, clutches start slipping, and it quits working. So, you can pull the pan and look at the valve body to see if any of that has been upgraded. If not, a good shift kit or just a pro built valve body, some hard parts you can install, and maybe a billet input, and you can have a sweet trans to do some dumb stuff with. I have one in all my conversions I own currently. You can get a compushift mini to control the over drive and lock up and they are relatively cheap too. It's hard to go fast in a 5 speed and in stop in go traffic, that garbage gets old. That's coming from a gear jammer. Haha I had a NV4500 in my 72 and pulled it because I wanted to go fast too.

That means your engine is more than likely a 160. If it's an 94 or early 95 it will have a WH1C on it. I can tell you some things to check on it and or do to it when you get there.

I know that the converter has been worked, so that is a very good thing. I guess I will start to put together a parts list for the this trans and I plan on now using it in this swap.

I was guessing that this engine was a 160 hp. Which is not a bad thing. I use to know a Cummins company field rep in Ohio and he use to tell me that they had these engines in marine applications back in the early 90's at 375 hp and they were very under stressed. So there is so much potential. Luckily I work for Case IH and we have a TON of cool parts for these engines in our system. My plan is to get it in the truck and then start exploring all the interesting parts I have available. As I said before this is going to be fun!

So I got the Cummins and the trans picked up over the weekend. Right after LST I will tear it all down and start the rebuild.

I also got the intercooler along with this deal and it is a GMC Duramax version. I put it up against the big block radiator and there should not be an interference issues like I have seen with the Dodge intercoolers on other builds. At least I hope that portion of this build goes fairly easy, we shall see...

The rear end has been making an intermittent noise when going down the road. So last night I took the watts link out, which I welded to the rear housing (because I was never ever going to have to service the rear end, RIGHT!). Ah well live and learn. Either way I will make the watts link so it will be removable now. So this evening after work I took the back diff cover off and started to examine the ring and pinion and the contents. The ring is in good shape, and as I found out tonight the ring is a 4:10! This is good because when I put the overdrive trans in for the Cummins swap it will not have to be spun so hard to go down the highway.

So now the plans are to replace all the rear end bearings (which is what is sounded like in the truck when driving that a bearing was going out), and then road trip the heck out of this thing. Should be good to go after this fix!!
