Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Cool trucks.
But that Tractor with the long wheel base, looks a lot longer than my 9500 Tandem with a 20 Ft Flatbed, lol. I would not want to drive it in the city hooked up to a 53 Footer (unless I just needed to go straight, lol).

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Yessir, you can still see the outline of "we make house calls" on the front bumper. As far as the engine goes, im pretty sure it was the inline 292 and the 4 speed; however, it has been fitted with a sbc and a dana 5 speed. I just so happen to have a 292 and 4 speed from my 63. I plan on putting the 292 back in for sure, but I may keep the 5 speed dana.
There's not much informaton on the cabover series of trucks that I've found so the validity of my statement could be way off. I've been scrounging this forum, the stove bolt forums, and the big bolt forums, but the cabovers are like hens teeth, hard to find. |

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
I'd be pretty surprised if a Fire Truck only had a 6-292. My guess would had been a 409 seeing that it is a Chevrolet.
By the way, although I'm not too knowledgeable on the COE Tilt, I believe you have a T-80 there. Looks to be in pretty nice shape.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
So after a little bit of research the title does start with a t code so it seems that the information about this being a "t" series truck seems to make sense. As far as the engine goes, I'm still not sure what exactly came in it. The heads on the engine that's in it currently don't look like 409 heads, maybe the 348? Honestly it still "looks" like a sbc to me, but I haven't dug into it. More research will need to be done to decipher block.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
You have a Small Block for sure. It is also not very original and probably not the original block. Let us know the Numbers on the Front Pad and we can tell you for sure.
The 2nd Picture is a GMC V-6 Engine.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Yep, SBC for sure and I'm guessing (even though this one may be swapped) that is what it originally had. Notice where the fan is mounted? If not originally a SBC they would have had to scrounge the parts from a T configuration.
You are correct on the 345/409 appearance with the W-heads/valve covers, which at a glance appear the same as a GMC V6.

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Here are some good examples of what the 348 and 409 look like:

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
Yeah I had a feeling something wasn't right about it... also I guess I was a little tired last night I didn't even realize that the center manifold wasn't split... silly gmc's.
Found this website last night: http://www.caaarguide.com/sub1/id435.html For 65 looks like the tilt series could be outfitted with a: 230 I6, 292 I6, 283 v8, 327 v8, 348 v8, and the 409 v8. Maybe it has some potential of being the 327. Next time I'm up at the garage I will pull the tag. |

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful
If the chart is accurate, like it looks like it is, the only Gas Engines available in the T-80 was the W-Block. Therefore it looks like your truck was either a 348 or 409 originally.
