bought a 1946-1972 GM truck parts manual on Ebay tonight... we'll see how much info it has. dated 1979 so I guess it was the last one printed... 1,000 pages. sniped someone at the last minute...

got my parts back from the powder coaters, pics to follow... one small blemich that I could see on the rad support, might take it back to recoat.

rad support, battery shelf, washer bottle holder, upper rad pipe, air cleaner, hood latch, center grille support, and inner 67-68 grille pieces cost $265. Some items had already been blasted, some hadn't.

not bad, i was hoping for $200 but it will work. sourkrout (john) and I coated a few smaller items, his oven is too small for anything larger than a fan but it's nice to get all of the little brackets coated for cheap. It would be a nice side job if you had the space for a blaster and large oven... the powder is dirt cheap once you invest in the gun.

Ok, got the 4 ft. cabinet, where do you find a big oven?

John used is old insert oven from his kitchen remodel, made a wheeled base for it.

A guy could get some insulated sheetmetal and make a larger oven using some used heating elements from a few stoves. I think it took 400 degrees for 20 minutes, great for cookies too!

You can find a cheap old stove for less than $40-50 I bet, find a nice green one from a remodel project!

Jaros44, if you keep your eyes open driving around you can find ovens for free alot. I agree with Mike very easy way to make some extra dough. I would be more into it if I had more space so I could fit a lrger oven and get a vent/filter, dust system. That is my only complaint about it, in my garage under living quarters that powder dust gets every were.
If you have a blast cabinet you could pickup a gun from Harbor Frieght to test you hand at it. They have a system for $30-60?? on sale. Can you tell I forget what they go for, but I know it is not alot of money.
Here is a link for you guys, I just wish I had more room, time and I would be slapping one of these puppies together. i have actually already got the heating elements, thermo and fiberglass wiring from a commercial oven for when the above comes to life. Then I can make Mikes life easy!

Thanks guys for the ideas and links( saved to technical info.) I have an old unused brick chimney for the dust, but I wonder if I would coat the next door guy's roof red. Maybe use my dust collector from the blast cabinet??? Saw a guy once blow his exhaust into a bucket of water to collect and keep his dust down, dunno.

Alright now you's guys got me thinkin'...any environmental impact with the powder coating

None that I know of, other than a good sinus infection if you dont were a mask. How do you think I know that?
That i the beauty of it clean up is just vaccum and blow out the gun with your air.
There are no warnings on any of the powders, I have used.
Jaros already gave this one to Mike but here is the best powder, customer service and price I have found. Some more fuel to get your wheels spinning.

oh yeah, depending on what you are going to coat you'll only need 1 pound ($12?), I bought two pounds of 50-60% satin black and it's the size of a large Folgers can!

Craigslist has tons of free ovens...

ok, got the powdercoated parts out of the truck today... one little area that i'm not happy with, might take it back to recoat it. It's near the upper radiator hold down. Little chip and few pimples... the bracket covers most of it, but I know that i'll stare at it forever!

looks like I need a 1/2 spacer for the air cleaner. With the intake spacer (needed to clear the Edelbrock fuel filter) I can't run the stock air breather spacer... TBD on the outcome of that..

I can't get paint to stick to the dang water pump either!!!! I guess I need to etch it with a media blaster since etch primer didn't do crap!

parts look good! is that radiator pipe stock? that is pretty cool if it is, sorry to show my ingnorance if it was stock. have only ever seen them aftermarket.

as far as the paint, i use duplicolor high heat, engine paint. i have had very good success with it. i use acetone out of a spray bottle for final cleaning of the part before spraying it on.

4x4's had the radiator pipe... most of them rotted over time of course, kinda hard to find a nice one. They were able to coat the inner necks of the pipe as well...

I used duplicolor, wax/grease remover and etch primer... and it flaked off!

I need to make a visit to your blast cabinet...

what do you think of the "pimples" on the rad support? he said if I grind it down he would recoat that area..

anytime on the cabinet. if you knock of the pimples he shoule be able to just coat the area. i was going to offer but if he will do it for free go with him were he will honor his work.

The powdercoated parts look good Mike. If it was me I'd take the core support back as well, because everytime you raise the hood it would be staring you in the face.

Sorry to high jack the thread, but can you post me some more pics of your pulleys?

The one on the waterpump looks backwards to me.
Can you confirm that was stock, and if so for a A/C?

Is your radiator pipe stock or did you have it bent?
I am thinking of having him bend one out of stainless when he does my exhaust.
The stock rubber line is too close to my oil filler tube.

I used to sell powder coating for industry.
We actually coated boat trailers and dune buggy frames for big clients to get the jobs.

A cabinet is easy to make out of some strip heating elements 1x1 metal tube, and sheet steel. You build it then put insulation all over it.
You need to look for 240VAC elements.

Some guys have used space heaters to blow air into the cabinet from one end to the other, but it is hard to get the heat up enough to cause flow out.

To minimze powder losses try preheating your part.
It sticks better than the electrostatic way.
Nice thing is you sweep up the mess and shoot it again.
