Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Yep, we'll have to re-work the tailpipes a bit higher to clear. Im really pleased with it. Measure, mark and measure 3 more times.. It was scary man.

We picked up one of the step bits and made things so much easier.

Looks so nice it makes me want to add a notch to the list when I drop mine. Now, if I just had the right helpers.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Chris the Porterbuilt stuff kicks some Kim Kardashian sized a55. It fits perfectly. The fabrication skills Nate has are really incredible. I feel 100% certain the frame is stronger with the notch than it was before I cut it.

I'm not surprised to hear you say that. I noticed how nice and beefy it looked compared to others that I've seen before. I'll be hitting you up for more specific info about that setup.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Much appreciated! Man, I was nervous.

It would be really tough to do this with the bed on though? I dont see how some have done it without removing the bed. Also, anyone considering it.. a good sharp step bit is the way to go. Good clean holes. It was $31 drill bit, but worth every cent

We did mine with bed on but we had the truck on a lift so it was not too bad

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Yeah, I can see where a lift would help a bunch too. Not something I would attempt in my driveway though. (Bed on) I bet that's a challenge.

Not all c-notches wrap around the top of the frame like a PB notch.
Most just slide in from the bottom.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

This is the first one I have ever installed, but as I found in general questions and research about 6.5 drop in the back is as low as you can go without modifications. Even at 6" the axle will bottom out on the frame on occasion.

I like a slightly taller tire than a 295/40.. just me. Plus I will be flipping the trailing arm brackets on this truck so I will be around 6.75" drop total. But, my tires will be 'tucked' like I want them.

The PB notch looks like it would allow about 2 or maybe 2.5" more room. Im not planning to go that low.. Im looking for handling, a nice pinion angle setup, increased shock travel / function while not bottoming out on every bump. Ride is still important. I want it to drive like a vette.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Compliments mean a lot coming from you guys! Thanks.

Im really excited about it. It has turned quite chilly in SE Tenn over the past few days so not much more has been done. We have decided just to paint the parts and save a little $. We just need to wait for some decent weather or take them to the booth. We'll get it.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

It was nerve racking to cut it. I had about 5% little voice saying, 'Are you sure?' But your right. Once the notch is in place and I saw how it fit and bolted in I felt much better about it. Im anxious to cut the other side now!

We just wanted to do one side at a time to make absolutely sure it fit perfectly.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Cool man! I wish I could have gone. It looks like a lot of fun.

Dad got the other side cut yesterday, the notch is in and almost finished up. He is painting the PB pieces (I went on the cheap a little, $130 for powder?) The PB will be primed good and painted with a Dark Grey color. It's actually a Toyota color but it looks really sharp. Just enough contrast against the black frame rails. It's almost done, we'll be bolting everything back up shortly. New Trailing arm bushings, I'll be flipping the brackets soon .. I ordered my drop blocks and U bolts this morning. I'm sticking with stock arms for now. The ones I have are really nice, nut rusted at all. I may change to the PB trailing arms as I get the coin.

Joy (my wife) and I are going to talk to the doctors on 10/26. We're trying IVF instead of adoption for now. The cost will be substantial so we'll see how it goes. I have considered selling my stepper to help with it and just keeping my GMC as my toy. All my step needs is paint and interior and it will be incredible. Absolutely rust free cab, blocked and in primer (SW P30a) Very nice metal, West Coast 68 front end. BS wheels.. Lokar stuff all over it, and of course the BBC. It will be a nice truck when finished, I'm just not sure I'll make it. I have been tossing around the idea of selling it though. Someone could take it to the body shop and finish it and have a really nice truck.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Pop has the notch finished up, Ill post some pics in a little bit. I still need to get the lower shock and track bars from Nate before we bolt everything else back up.

Trailing arm bracket flip on the list for this weekend. Im probably going to need to cut the tailpipes off right behind the muffler so we can set the ride height. Once its back together we'll tweak the exhaust as needed.

Turned out nice!

I still need to drill / mount my PB track bar bracket on the frame rail of course but for the most part, the top is finished. I'll order the reset ASAP.
