Re: What did you do to your truck today??

The bushings on my rear shocks were completely shot. The shocks were rattling and squeaking, so I replaced the bushings.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Looks like I'll be going to the junkyard tomorrow. My van started shifting weird a week or so ago, and today when I pulled into my driveway the transmission started grinding. Still works, but doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence. I'll also have to try harder to fix the 99 now.

That's a real bummer. Good luck at the wrecking yard tomorrow.

I pulled the front suspension apart on my '89 K1500 this evening. Discovered I need new CV shafts and hubs. The cost of this rebuild just doubled.

There are two sizes of upper control arm bushings listed. One is 41mm and the other is 43mm with no apparent way to tell ahead of time. I ordered the wrong size, of course, so I had to go buy a set of the 41mm bushings.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Got my front suspension put mostly back together yesterday. I'm going to look for a set of new shock bushings today. Also, the bolts that attach the new CV axles to the diff are too long, so I need to sort that out. Replaced the following parts:

Upper & lower control arm bushings
Upper & lower ball joints
Tie rod ends
Pitman and Idler arms
Sway bar end links
Hubs
CV Axles
CV/hub seals

Leaf spring and Shackle bushings are next on the list.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Took my truck for a quick test drive today, and the upper control arms are shifting on the off-brand bushings I got from O'Reilly. I ordered a set of 41mm Moog bushings today to match all of the other components I installed. Will swap them out in a couple of days when they arrive.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

I like how the 4wd has beefier control arms.

Pulled the transmission out of the van, now it's pouring rain. I did find a transmission at the junkyard, the only one they had, but its condition is unknown. The fluid inside looked decent and there were no chunks in the pan. They will warranty it, but it will suck to do all that work then have to pull it back out if it's bad.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Well the Moog upper control arm bushings solved the slipping issue I had with the O'Reilly Precision bushings. The Moog bushings measure at 41.47mm in diameter, and the Precision are 41.13mm. That's a pretty big difference for a press fit. The Precision bushings practically fell out of the control arms, and the Moog bushings were quite difficult to press in.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

I got this truck with 33’s and the p.o. cranked the torsion bars all the way up. It has been a stiff ride, there is interference when I’m turning while going out a driveway. I softened the ride by adjusting the torsion bars, each turn of the adjusting bolt lowered it about 1/8”. Eight turns and it lowered 1”. The ride was noticeably smoother, but there was interference when turning. I decided to shave off the end of the front bumper and the plastic piece there. While I was at it I replaced the shocks, one was bad. I also greased the ball joints. It looks like the upper A-arm may have been replaced as it is not rusty like everything else, and the upper A-arm ball joint has a grease zerk. The lower ball joint has no zerk.

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Started the process of replacing the bushings in the rear Leaf springs and shackles. Moog lists the same bushings foe both, but the shackle bushings do not have an outer metal case. I ordered a set of Moog shackles today with new bushings already installed.

Spent some time with a hammer and dolly working out some large dents in the lower front corner of the passenger bed side. I've been searching for a light blue door for six months now to address the dent in the door. Seems to be a rare color.

The 305 in my '89 Cheyenne developed a low-end knock, so I replaced it with a 4.8L LS from an '02 Silverado

Re: What did you do to your truck today??

Well, last night I finished replacing the lower intake gaskets, and plenum gasket, cleaned the intake, replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets, and did an overall clean-up under the hood. I had a leak on the rear of the intake manifold. Looked to be a previous job done wrong.
