I drove by the road to it on the 101 and what came to mind was years ago I read newspapers all about Patty Hurst and her abduction and all ..not sure how far off the 101 the castle is..

Best memory guess is about 2 miles in off 101. They had their own shipping port/dock down at San Simeon Beach and their own hydro electric power plant back in the hills above the Castle.

I understand that Cal Poly Engineering Students thru energy grants are improving and updating the power plant and adding a series of small generation systems much like San Francisco's Hetch Hetcy Power and Water System on a much smaller scale of course

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

I remember going to San Simeon as a kid. My parents would load us up in the station wagon and get a place on the beach. I can't remember how many times I've been to that castle. William Randolph Hearst was certainly one rich mofo.

I'd go up there when I was in my 20's and get a room by the beach with my girl. Those were good times. We did some naughty things on that beach where no one could see us. It's a nice place.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

I started delivering papers when I was 9. Started with the afternoon Examiner and 80 houses. By the time I was 10, I had over 200 houses between the morning Chronicle and my afternoon routes. Had to go around collecting once a month. That took a week of evenings after school to do. It was a pain in the neck. Never knew when people would be home or who was stiffing you and just wouldn't answer the door. Both papers owned by the Hearst family.

Bought my first BMX Mongoose Motomag with that paper route money and eventually my first 900.00 car with the money that I'd saved.

When I was 13, my folks took us to San Simeon and we took a tour of that castle. Wow, it was something! Kinda felt like I owned part of it for all of the damn papers that I'd delivered in the rain! Like maybe ONE of the gold plated sink strainers that are all over the place .

That castle is certainly something!

Purty flower you got there.. have you ever made sunflower seeds to split open with your teeth and spit out the hulls?

I have ,,, and what I did was take the seeds out of the flower and soak them in brine over night and then spread them out on a cookie sheet an roast them in the oven..

This was back in the 80ies when working buiding the Nuclear Plant and every body had a mouth with a jaw sticking out full of sun flower seeds , the company even hired extra laborers to sweep up the seeds and pea nut shells from the workers from the floors ..

Now I see where then seeds came from by a close up photo.. thx

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

Yes, that's me. I have an underwater camera for the first time on the river. My daughter gave it to me. We did seven miles, real easy. There was plenty of water so shallow over rocks were no problem. It was perfect since much higher can get hairy (not that I'd mind). We went from mile marker 21 (Burners Ford) to 28 (Indian Springs bridge). Our friend owns Downriver Canoe Co. but he shut it down for this summer. His son has a baby and they are just enjoying the first year together rather than deal with the hassles that come with the virus. He normally leases the property at Compton, which is at the foot of the mountain my sister lives on. We usually put at mile 13/JR's Campground (15 mi) to ride the rapids, but this was my brother in law's plan. We put in late afternoon as well. Perfect distance. Plenty of water so we took the Lower Mill Race side stream.

First a map, then Lower Mill Race, My sister in a fun spot, and the Colors family farm

So,that's where ya been at? That looks like a lot of fun and the good ol excersize doesn' hurt us either.. But, ,they shouldn't let you paddle behind them ,you being the old guy and all .. they need to watch ya better,,
Do ya tip over in the kyyak and take photos with the underwater camera?

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

I haven't tried that yet. But it did rain on us a little. My sister is two years older and I think Paul is the same age. Me and my sister also did a couple hikes on the two afternoons my brother in law gives guitar lessons online. He's a musician by trade and due to this virus is out of work, other than the two days of lessons. Can't be any noise in the house and I was there to install a butcher block kitchen countertop I had put together at home and hauled down. The plan was a workation for a week and it was very good for me to get away. I was only home one day after running up to see my mom for four days. Up until August I hadn't been much of anywhere other than to jobs. Down to by the Chesapeake Bay for the one job was like a vacation in July and a little of August. Then it was make three runs to haul 4" block I bought used from an area just north of where my sister lives

First picture is the low water bridge to the guy's place with the block.
Second and third are a repair I did on the cottage down near the bay
Fourth is a small little chapel near the river just downstream from my mom's town.
Fifth is the kitchen in my sister's cabin. I didn't realize the drawers weren't back in yet

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

The low water bridge stone is something I never done ,, I diverted a slow running stream and poured a cement road across and then it later became underwater..

The rotten wood is familiar ,,I cannot see it if there are signs of Termites ,,maybe just dry rot from moister,, Hammer is a Estwing just like one of the ones I used to use for tearing out the rottn wood .

Nice little cabin kitchen ,nice and white and clean .. good job on all Tim ,,sure does bring back memories of the look a like work that I too have done ..lot of times ,,jobs no one else will take ..right?
