Well I'm back finally not under the best circumstances but I'm back to say the least. To fill you all in I dropped an angle grinder on top of my thumbs on the 28th of January and ended up nicking my tendon on my right thumb so needless to say I've been off for a month and a half now and have finally restarted work after about five weeks of rest and therapy to get my thumb bending like it should. I'm all good still getting it back to 100% but hey that's why I'm young right?? Haha. I'll post pictures but spoiler alert if you don't like blood.

Anyway I'll be filling you guys in on the progress of my downed truck. Poor baby has been parked since early January with a head gasket and intake leak so here's to new ventures, rehabilitation, and wasted tax returns!!

No doubt Dale I've probably had the worst stretch of luck within two months than I have all my life it certainly poured but enough of my sob story I've got a motor to fix.

Alright so the knowns of issues currently:
Rust/brown coloring in radiator.
Head leak under cylinder 6/8.
Intake leak at back dribbling to trans.

What I plan to attack:
Pull pulley drive system off completely.
Pull motor and drop off with coworker/engine tech for the work of removing the heads/intake and eliminating all leaks.
Have heads Magnafluxed by a local machine shop to be sure they aren't cracked.
Have radiator checked and flushed possibly to see if it can be repaired or If I need to buy a new replacement.

Plans of upgrades:
Pull radiator and begin installing vintage air A/C components since motor is out.
Purchase new GM compressor 96-98 ext cab model.
Purchase overflow tank.
Install MSD ignition box on firewall somewhere with a custom bracket.
Clean/rebuild carb.
Check fitment/clearances for my previously purchased Doug thorley headers (need to have my motor mounts fabbed to allow new headers to fit.
New plug wires for the distributor.

Will add on if anything else needs done but this is the majority of it.

Well my motor is a 350/330 horse GM crate motor but she sat in waiting for nearly 7 years before we finally got to it and ran her. So in our presumption the gaskets just corroded and began to leak. My fault for not just having it pulled apart and resealed when it was just a block. I'm Hoping that is all that's wrong though..

Alright well I went ahead and tackled draining the moor and radiator of all fluids the other night an proceeded to strip her bare of the pulley system with fan and shroud as well as the carb and distributor with plugs. Did some solid work for one night so hopefully I'll be I the gas track once my motor guy is ready for it. Here's a before an after. One big problem as shown is how nasty the water was inside, Concerns me a bit, I have a spring type metal inside my lower hose that looked fairly bad after inspection would this possibly be my problem and I need to get a new one? Or do you guys run them at all?

The spring is simply there to keep the lower hose from collapsing. I don't have one in my 71, but that wasn't my doing. It was missing before I bought the truck. I'm not overly concerned about it though. I do have the spring in my GTO and every other lower hose I've purchased for previous vehicles. They will rust, but I don't think it would cause that much rust color in your fluids. Is your t-stat top brass or is it colored from rusty antifreeze? Did your motor sit for 7 years with antifreeze/water mix in it? Could have been forming rust in the water passages that whole time.

If you're going through all the other parts of the engine, you might want to have the block flushed too. It would at least help get the loose rust out.

Wonder if someone sells new springs.. I'd like to keep one in there but not if it's gonna be browning my water system. T-stat is colored from the rust. Water was empty the entire seven years as far as I know. I am curious on the flushing coul I simply get away with drowning cascade down the water neck in the intake to clean it out? Seemed to be a good process on the 71 we have.

There is a flush you can buy that you run through your system, forget what it is called. You basically run without the tstat installed and it loosens corrosion and stuff, then stick a hose in the stat housing while running until the water flows through clear. Then fill to the correct % antifreeze.

Yeah I'll have to flush the system quite a bit since it ran through my vintage air unit not good timing for the brand new system.

You can run the flush in your system, with your heater on, and it will clean out the heater core in your VA system. You've got to do this with everything assembled though. Not while the engine is apart. I'd recommend doing it before you disassemble, if you're going to flush the system.

There lies a problem in that she's down to eight trans bolts and two motor mounts and she's able to be pulled :/ I'll just have to flush after at this point.

No harm in doing it after. It is definitely better to do it after then not at all.

You might try hooking up a hose to you inlet heater hose and let it flow through the outlet hose. Not sure if it will work, but it might be worth a try. I'd leave your heater hoses connected to the core so it doesn't drip inside your cab.

Oh it will be flushed quite a few times for sure I can guarantee that. Leaning towards getting the brand new radiator so that I'm certain my water System is good.

Should be able to just run water through the inlet hose of the heater core to clean out the system. I'll be sure to do that in the coming week.

Ouch! that thumb shot looks painful. Power tools can make a mess of flesh. I have seen some nasty stuff in the machine shop over the years. Glad you are back in business now.
Hope you get your cooling system fixed up.

Thanks mcbassin. Honestly she didn't hurt all that bad, hell I bandaged up and drove myself to he darn hospital that was quite a site bu yeah I'm ready to tearinto this thing and get her back on the road the truck has me gloomy like the rain today. But I'm confident she'll make a stronger than ever return.
