Coach
I am moving slow but I am watching your every move! Haha. I am attempting the same treatment for the front of my truck. I have everything welded up just waiting for some money to buy my air ride system. What bags are you using? Also thank you so much for posting pics it is a great reference. |

Sorry I have nothing else to add. Yes it is sad. Good thing I bought everything I needed before the dollar crashed.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
I had about an hour to kill last night between hauling kids around, etc.
I still had the upper ball joint binding issue, so I was curious what it would take to get the running boards on the ground. Seemed like I had three options:
Since pie cutting the UCA was free, and I had spare UCA's in case I screwed up, it was chosen. A quick Google search and I found a link on a S-10 site. http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f125/p...l-arms-393969/ 20 minutes later my running boards are within a 1/8" of the ground. This morning I nipped the bump stops off and now it is sitting on the ground. Tonight I will give them a really good tack, and then remove them to final weld them. |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Another solid weekend........
Bottom of Thunderbird IRS cross member and Danforth cross member final welded and cleaned up ready for paint. I pulled the cover of the 8.8 and gave it a thorough once over. The fluid was stinky and dirty.....but it looks clean and solid. I had about 1/4 of can of KBS coatings that I wanted to use on the rear end. The can was a couple years old so I destroyed the cover when trying to get it open. I painted my front UCA's, rear LCA's and center section of the 8.8 as well as a bunch of the frame before the can was empty. |

Looks good. You should be in good shape for getting it back on the road by spring.

I actually ran this motor/ tranny in the truck for the summer, so I am comfortable with it. Just wishing for more HP.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
nice progress. If budget allows, I'd buy up a full roller sbc with vortec heads. 400 bucks running around my parts if you can find them. That is the cheapest route to go for HP and keeping that old school flavor. Get a cheap intake or go with a 2-300 dollar one and that's the biggest expense. Minor head work needs done, and you can get a decent roller cam from GM for $225. again, you can toss money into an sbc and if you take it to the machine shop, good bye budget. or... find a healthy vortec and you'll love the power. Then keep your engine you have now for a back up. Its nice to have a running engine on deck. trust me you or a friend might need it someday! Just run this while you build the new one. anyway, just my take.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
The motor is a wants vs needs thing. I want big HP.....but ultimately this SBC works great.
When I installed this SBC I could see the cross hatching in the cylinders. Low mileage and I knew 100% of it's history. Only issues are it leaks a little bit, and the valve seals are shot. My thoughts were a set of heads to bump up the compression a bit. http://www.aeroheadracing.com/chevrolet-heads/ Regasket the whole thing and run it. Already have a intake and 4 barrel, headers, cam, etc......... |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
You could always get a motor ready over the summer and swap it next winter.

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
Worst case scenario is the motor in it's current condition gets tossed back in.........which is not the end of the world.
We will have to see what the budget looks like closer to completion...... |

Re: 1949 Chevy 3600 into a daily driver
All the parts look good painted. Coach, same issue we all face isn't it...project creep vs time vs budget vs desired end result and best way to mix all of them to get a project back on the road. You will do well with whichever way you decide to go.
