Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Well, I haven't been able to get much done over this extended weekend. On Thursday, my regulator on the compressor decided it didn't want to play anymore. Finally got that repaired yesterday and was able to get the last two rivets out of the crossmember. You know, it's amazing to me how much power the old regulator/oiler was robbing from my air tools! Now with just the regulator, this thing zings!!!
Ok, for anyone tagging along I have a question....do I really NEED this crossmember? I think the only real reason it was there before was to hold the carrier bearing, but I'm going to be running a one-piece driveshaft now. The only other thing I can think of is emergency brake cables and exhaust hangers were attached to it. Let me know what you think. |

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Tiny update here. Now that I have the 205, I can actually run the 4wd lever the way I originally wanted it.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Im not sure it would be required--but if its not in the way I think Id leave it. Frame rigidity is not a bad thing.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Well, it kind of is in the way. I'm just going to modify it to work somehow I think...

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
I would leave it, power is twist so I would just work some magic and modify it.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Nice job on the linkage Mike mucho bettero! IMO I would figure a way to run a crossmember in the area. Maybe get your rear drive line sorted and then revisit, if moving it back won't work think about cutting it out and then fab or source another.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
You could always consider moving it back a bit then may not have to modify it for clearance, or minimal.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
The loop idea is what I would have done 1st, instant drive shaft safety loop also..

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Yesterday, I was able to get the crossmember cut out, and my new clearance piece tacked up. I was going to try to finish it today, but just ran out of time.
I used my plasma to cut the pipe in half. I used the angle iron as guides. I'm actually surprised by the fact that I was able to actually get it in half tacked up! Next up is to drill all the bolt holes and get this piece checked off! |

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Thanks Rick! I think it's going to work, but I do need to clearance a little more I think. It looks like it may still hit.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Thanks guys!! I hadn't considered it, but it may be kind of cool. I need to see if I'm going to have enough clearance with the way that it is right now.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Great work! That's what I would have done to. If the lower half of the tube won't fit there, you could just put a strapat the front or rear hanging down and around to add a safety feature.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Hey Rick! I haven't made any progress on the truck. I've been pouring every spare minute into finishing my last 3 classes for my degree. I should be graduated no later than the end of March. After that, I will start working on it again. Of course I do have some new life goals which will slow down the progress on the truck, but it will at least start moving forward again.

Re: 69 GMC "Ol' Blue"
Ok, it's time to start making some progress again on this. I'm happy to report that I was able to finish my degree! I now have my BS in IT. I've always had the BS part down, but now I have a diploma to go with it!
Things are probably going to start off pretty slow, as I need to get out in the garage and get it organized again. Then I need to start making an action plan of items that need to be completed. |
