Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
Getting real close now! Need some advice. I've been looking everywhere for a decent bench seat cover to replace the worn one I had. I can't find ANYTHING that looks like it'd work or good. I found this and was thinking, maybe? Tan cover with this pic on the back (not too large, it'd be towards the center). What ya'll think

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
Ok, nobody (not even my brother) wants to see the horses on my bench seat. I kind of like the look of the horses, and the scroll around them would match up with the pinstripe on truck. I dunno...
No paint today. Masked some more. Looking at Sunday now

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
Paint came out beautiful. Right after you covered the white, it looks like you sprayed something along the edge of the paper, what was it, it was a little different in color??...Jim

Thanks Jim That's just how it looked with the first coat of Med. Bronze applied over the white (that he initially overshot on purpose). In the end, around the white - he shot a little more Med. Bronze than the rest to ensure the white was covered well. Since it's all the same brand paint (DuPont), it goes good with each other - spraying over the top of the white didn't have any negative effects.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
Thanks, I've never two tone one before, but it makes since with the first light coat the white would still be showing thru....Jim

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
I love how a series of pictures like that make it look like child's play In reality it took a bunch of time to tape off, paint, tape off, etc. etc.
One other question, did you do any sanding after the base coat or just go right to clear after the appropriate time? I have read where some guys actually do some sanding to remove any flaws that may have happened. It doesn't look like you had any runs or issues like I usually do. thanks |

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
You cant do that with metallics-the sanding scratches will show. I usually go straight from base to clear, just tack REALLLY well before starting the clear. You can Fix base by wetsanding with 600-800, then blend your base back over before clearing.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
It probably took 4hrs to tape/mask. Not bad. You just have to be meticulous, then double check to make sure everything is good to go. He shot the primer, paint and clear in sessions with 15-20 minutes in between to allow what he sprayed to flash/dry before applying the next. Like Elco mentioned, tack the paint on the last coat really well before shooting the clear. Like shown in the pictures above, he wiped it down with the tack cloth and lots of over spray came off.
It took probably close to 3 hours to spray, mask off the white, and spray again. My brother thinks this is probably the best paint job he's done to date. Definitely more challenging/work due to the two tone. Oh, and he's mentioned to me before - "always shoot dry, never wet". I'd think it's either dry or dryer if needing to adjust.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
We're looking to buy a new small car. Can anybody give a review on the Fiat 500? Know someone that owns one and what they think, insight or how it's held up. Thanks!

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"
Thanks Ryan The small car is for another brother of mine. We've been looking at what's available and drove some today. So far, he likes the Fiat 500 over the Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta. I know they're all probably throw away cars essentially. We'll check out the Chevy Sonic tomorrow.
