Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
I tried to take photo but my camera is not good enough. It is bright enough to see around the cab but would not want to read a novel using it.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
Got the new starter in, added more gas, primed the carb and it fired on first hit of the switch. Would not idle, so looks like the used carb that "came out of a running vehicle" was bogus. So a new carb is in the future. Tach works, did not get it hot enough to check the engine and trans temp. PS works. Transfer case having an issue with L-H selector but could just need ran a little in 4wd to lube things up. I think I wired the gas gauge backwards, when I turn on the key it dives to past empty. Mufflers are a LOT quieter than my Chevelle but wife still heard in the greenhouse and thinks they are loud so all is good.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. I just pulled the hazard fuse, I think it may just be an issue with some feedback because none of the turnsignal, tail or brake lights are hooked up. If not then it might be something in the switch internals, if that is the case then looks like I will be going old school without the hazard feature I am not going to go back into the column or replace it unless it affects the turn signals. For all I know a bug could have crawled up in there for the winter and is causing the problem. Once had that happen with an old house thermostat, earwig got trapped between the contacts and when we went to turn on the heat for the first time in the fall he fried and furnace would not start. Little clean up and point file and I was good to go.

Great story about the earwig!
Is your camera have a bad microphone, or is the truck really that quiet? |

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
I put on the longest Dynomax mufflers they had, this one I want to be relatively quiet for stalking thru the woods! And to keep the navigator happy. I have found the phone mic is very selective depending on the frequency, I was surprised how quiet it sounded on the clip too. If you listen right at the first you can really hear the alternator, but standing next to the truck I cannot, but my hearing is compromised in certain frequencies too.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
During short test drive in and out of garage I noticed ebrake was not working. Turned out that I over estimated how the portion with the coiled spring would work and instead of it compressing in a gentle bend as the brake was applied it just kinked where it came out of the sheath in the frame. I checked the 74 truck manual and instead of the cable being perpendicular to the frame like I did it, is needs to be more parallel.
I made an oblong hole in the frame between the clutch shaft casting and rear spring saddle. Then fabbed a bracket to get the right angle. When that was done the cable ended up shorter. I ditched the frame pulley, shortened the stock back cable again and used a turn buckle as a connector and adjustment. Here are photos of the stock back piece, turn buckle, cable thru the frame and bracket before paint. I hated removing the nice frame paint, hope I can get a good match back. Also the turn buckle is covered with a piece of heater hose, there was slight interference with the brake booster. Brake now works fine. Also notice the th350 is leaking from the shifter shaft and another adjustment point on the passenger side. I am not going to worry about it until I have some miles on it, hopeful that it will seal it self back up. If not I hope the seals can be change from the outside...

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
Awesome Orrie! I found this tool on Ebay for replacing the shifter shaft seal, but I don't know about the other seal that may be leaking, but maybe time will heal it!
Great work! I know you'll have it repaired in no time flat! dne' http://www.ebay.com/itm/190529677849...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
The tools that Denee linked above work fantastic. I used to be a mechanic for the Post Office and put in thousands of shift shaft seals with a set like that. It takes about 5 minutes start to finish with them.
For a one time only deal, you can work around buying the tools by using little screws to pull the seal and a piece of conduit or socket to drive the new one in. In the first picture, you can see where I drove two little tiny screws into the old seal and grabbed them with dikes to pull it out. New seal tapped into place.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
Thanks for the info, will not be the first time I used a nut and stacked washers or socket to install a seal. Here is the other place it is leaking on the other side, does it have the same type of seal?? At first it looked like maybe one of the line fitting above was leaking but they are dry.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
When I started up the truck I found that the throttle linkage conflicted with the HEI wiring. I bent the pedal arm, but then could not get full travel to open the secondaries. Solution was to take off the heim assembly, weld a tab to a coupling, and use a T nut to make a much thinner end.

Re: Lurker OrrieG Progress Pics
Carb problem solved (was the soleniod deal I talked about above), timing set (it was was advanced), took it out to terrorize the neighborhood ala sgtusmc. Heres a video
http://s1156.photobucket.com/user/Or...23856.mp4.html Neither one of the temp gauges are working, stock for water or new trans temp one. Also have a drain on the battery I need to find, so far nothing obvious.
