Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Here's the roof skin I removed for my truck. Was a pain removing this nicely for reinstall but I did it. I'm excited that the roof section will be cleaned up as well. Gm should have covered the insides with something but I guess they aren't in the business of building vehicles for longevity.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
You are right. They are in the business of selling new vehicles. When I worked in the warehouse every summer, we would scrap the parts that were 10 years old to make way for the new model parts. As a car guy it used to kill me to scrap such good stuff.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I ordered a new worm gear for my manual steering gear box from borgeson. This is 16:1 ratio rather than the 24:1 ratio the truck boxes used so less spinning of the wheel. Normally you wouldn't want his in manual steering but since I added the power assist it should be beneficial. This could be ordered in cars like camaros that were racing in straight lines and had skinny front tires.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I have the power assist on one of my trucks, it actually works better then the trucks with power steering.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
That's good to hear. I've never had one driving with Power assist and everyone else almost removes it immediately so I was wondering if I was making a mistake keeping it but this truck is all about being different in a stock kind of way so I kept it .

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I had my original 67 outside door handles rechromed and I repaired the back side using metal and rivets. I also had to add a momentary contact for my illuminated entry so every time you push the button the contact is made that triggers the interior lights for 15 seconds and triggers the door lock cylinder lights too.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Nothing new here really. I needed to do this to finish up the door lock lights and it is a nice touch to repair original door handles easily. Its not quite how cadillac did it on the car handles but it works. I am done adding cadillac equipment to this truck now. I am going to check out the progress on my cab next week. That's what I really want to get working on when it returns.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
The inner roof is out! Going to put the correct holes in it for the headliner and then clean up the rust. The outer roof will get replaced with the panel I removed and after the bare metal from both sides are rust free and sealed it will get put back In.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Well I had some real trouble trying to make the holes for the headliner nicely so I decided to separate the panels and install the one from the 71 in the 67 cab. That way it will fit and look factory even though headliners didn't start till 69.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I was trying to figure out how to possibly activate my gear vendors without using all of the electronics they give. Well I may have found a solution. In 1972 gm used this speedometer setup to control emmisions. It would activate a solenoid at a certain speed and shut it at another speed. That's how I would like to activate the unit. The allen key screws can adjust the speeds when it completes the circuit. I am also adding an original 3 standard transmission od pull handle that will activate a switch so I can shut it off completely if I want to. I am not adding anything to make it so I can split shift. In this truck that would be useless for me.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Well I may not be able to use the speedo unless I can find the 37 tooth gear that fits it. Turns out the ones made for 700r4 have a different shape on the end. Won't give up on that too easily yet.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
So I early have to find a gear for this unit. It works just like gear vendors wanted it to operate. Kicks in at 45mph and out at 25mph. That way it won't hunt I and out at one particular speed. I took a video of it with a drill on the end to variate the speeds. When the ohm meter buzzer is sounding the gear vendor is off. When it shuts off the gear vendor is engaged. Heres the video. https://youtu.be/y9OsuoCRckE (don't watch it on full volume)
This is straight from gear vendors website... The Gear Vendors AutoDrive circuit will keep the overdrive on until you are down below 25mph – this way the transmission can use the overdriven gears at the appropriate speeds bring the ratios closer to you and we have no hunting caused by being in the wrong gear or between gears. Below 25 we know 1st would be the correct gear so then we turn off the overdrive in both manual and auto positions. In Auto it will come back on once you get above 47mph again. |

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Well I bought the gear I need from a member here which is sweet. Also, being I am changing the inner roof I decided to go with the newer style rear view mirror as the roof is pressed out for it. Looks a little more dulux than the 67 style guess. And another member sold me the red cover for it. I thought I may have a long wait for it like finding 72 red original door panels. This board rocks for finding those specialty items.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
So in order to use the roof with the holes it it for the headliner I needed to make a fiberglass mold of the holes for stingray. So here it Is. Turned out very nice. Now I can get the roof to the metal shop for install

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Well tonight I split 2 of my t3 bulbs. 1 high and 1 low beam. The springs look just like a signal bulb inside. I pictured something more extravagant for a headlight. I am just doing this for experimental purposes. Im going to mount these to a h4 backing and try some different bulbs in it and see what the pattern looks like. I understand this is illegal and I would not use these if the beam pattern is harmful to oncoming traffic.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I got a free fiberglass box cover for my 67 today. Mounts without making any holes in the box. I'm not sure if I'm going to use it but for that price I couldn't turn it down. Last few picture is a random picture of one just like it from the net that shows it on a truck. I'm not sure what the brand is. Anyone know what brand this is?

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Did you have to do any cutting to get this out, or was it all spot weld drilling? How easy was it to get it out of the cab once it was all loose?

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I know my metal guy had to massage the area up by the visor mounts/pillars a bit to get it out but not sure if he cut it or how hard it was to get out. When I took it out of the roof that was cut I just cut what I needed to to get it out. I'll ask him next time I'm there.
