Growing up in the 80's in Europe, you didn't and don't see a lot of american classics, so our best shot on getting a glimps of cool cars was: The dukes of hazard (original series ofcourse..) A-team (where they went through these kind if trucks like a woodstove) Dallas etc. I especially blame the A-team for creating my love for trucks

you are doing a great job! keep up the good work.

The flat bed is Uber Cool! Agreed.

Today I finally finished wheel polishing.

Enough said on that topic.

So I got it off the jack stand and went for a drive. I took it over to my friends place (one of the body guys, he wet sanded and polished my paint) and he has a rock driveway. I noticed the reflexion of the paint and to me it looks like seeing the rocks through the water. Very cool...

Then I came back into town and saw this truck for sale. He bought it last year just like it is and is now selling it. Haven't talked to him yet to know why. Not really my style, but a cool truck. Lots of custom touches. The Sleepy Eye Salvage sign is pretty neat...

Then I rolled over to the train depot, which is a museum now, and they have a monument to Chief Sleepy Eye I used as a back drop. The grain elevator in the background is kinda neat too...

One item less on the Punch list:
fan/headlight wiring upgrade
adjust e-brake cable
horn
Cowl shims
Washer pump
finish exhaust/install closed loop O2 sensor
upholstory recovered
alignment
air cleaner
touch up paint under hood
stereo (eventually)
floor mats
Aim headlights

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

Made just a little progress tonight but knocked another item off the punch list and it's kind of an important one. I aimed/adjusted the headlights. Easy enough to do, there are a ton of procedures out there.

The one I used basically had me 25' from my garage door. I measured the hieght of my headlights center to the ground (27") and used tape to mark a horizontal line across the garage door that is just a couple inches lower than the headlights.

Then mark where the centerline of the truck should be on that line. (I got behind the truck and looked down the hood ridge and noted the point on the garage door).

Then measure the distance from the headlight center to the truck centerline or middle of the grill and transfer that distance to marks on the horizontal tape line (it's about 30.5").

Then just have a nice dark evening and turn on the headlights and adjust the height to where the top of the beam is at the horizontal line. Adjusting side to side is harder because the beams are kind of wide with my new headlights, so I just tried to get them somewhat centered on the marks. Some people like to aim them a bit more to the right to get a better view of the ditch and be able to see deer better.

This made a huge difference. When I last drove it home at night the low beams were about useless. I used the high beams all the way and never had it bother an oncoming driver. Hell, it barely reflected off the road signs.

Completely different story now. I swapped to the new style headlights with the replacable bulb last year, but just eyeballed the adjustment. The low beam now is better than my old halogen high beams originally were. Took it for a short drive and it's comparable to any of my newer cars for brightness. Truly a night and day difference, pun intended.

I still plan on updating the wiring to relays to save the light switch and get full voltage to the lights, but I am very happy with the power I have now.

On another note, I called safelite the other day to get a different windshield for the truck. The one they installed just doesn't fit right. It's loose on both sides and doesn't seal. So the installer comes this morning to do that and fix a chip in the Denali windshield. We look at the new glass he brought and it looks like it's shaped like the old one and he figured it wouldn't fit any better. He said the best option was to have his boss order glass from another manufacturer (mentioned ppg and another one) to see if it has a better shape and hopefully a better fit. So that's the plan. He'll come back next week with a new windshield and try again. Results on that will definitely be posted here.

Punch list:
fan/headlight wiring upgrade
adjust e-brake cable
horn
Cowl shims
Washer pump
finish exhaust/install closed loop O2 sensor
upholstory recovered
alignment
air cleaner
touch up paint under hood
stereo (eventually)
floor mats

Thanks VA, its a great driver. I see you have a new build thread and business plan. Best of luck with that. I think you need to change the avatar though, even if you are still going to continue with kitchen work. Here's a name idea if I was going to work on these for a living... Mikes Muscle Trucks.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

Quick question for you ? What neutral safety switch did you use ? The one that Painless recommends for the fuel injection doesnt have a way to bolt to the column ? Just wondering what you did on that part ? Thanks

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

I used the one on the column. I swapped the van one for a truck one and just plugged it in the normal harness. In my opinion, the most painless wiring is just using the stock harnesses, but I don't have all the added loads you do. There are universal switches available and you could probably make one work. Or just jumper it for now to get things fired up and then fix it later.

I am confused. I thought the neutral safety switch was in the tranny, am I reading this wrong? I guess I did not even think about what all the wires were when I had my column out.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

Well on the TH-350 and 400 I think the neutral safety switch is not in the tranny but in the shifter. For column shift trucks the switch is mounted on the column just a few inches back from the firewall under the dash. There are 2 plugs that plug into it. Purple wires IIRC. Floor shifters (aftermarket) will have the switch built into them usually.

Dang, 1000 posts and still not quite done.

The body work on your firewall looks like someone used concrete. But Rome wasn't built in one day. Good luck

I used the stick on kind from LMC. I had the painters install them so I didn't screw 'em up all crooked and wrinkly.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

I'm thinking on doing the same as the side logo and distressing the final product so it matches the truck, so it has got to be paint. But I think yours just finishes off the tailgate so well.

I'm planning on bringing the truck to its first show. More for the convenience of driving in and having the room to put swap meet finds into than anything. I wanted to do this one last year but it just wasn't ready. So if any of you people are in the area and go to the show/swap, find me and say hi.

Wow, someone without a build thread, pics of their own, or much of a post count certainly has a lot of shat to talk. Keep enjoying what you've built, hgs. Other dude, piss up a rope.

Just a guess, but he may have been looking at early pics in the thread of my cab after sand blasting which gave the few spots of filler a rough cast look, then he just posted without seeing how far this build actually got.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

If I am going to park this thing at a show and by show cars, I will probably have to open the hood. There are some things under my hood that could use some cleaning up, well ok, all of it really. I took a few minutes today to try and improve a few things, but it's a work in progress. I think it's much better anyway.

First I cleaned up some of my wiring for the EFI. I added some more of that plastic covering to camoflage it a bit, a few more wire ties and its better.

I sprayed a little paint on the throttle linkage, so its not brown rusty dirty metal now.

I also touched up a few spots on the brake booster/master cylinder. I went to NAPA and got a new air filter. BTW, their 2096 fits a 14" air cleaner and only cost me like $8.

Then I found a wire clamp to hold the main harness behind the driver side headlight, added a wire tie or 2 and some pieces of black tape to clean up the wiring there, and by the battery too. The wiring in that area is kind of a mess because the harness is splitting up for the lights, voltage regulator, alternator, etc. I just hid it as much as I could. (pics didn't turn out, too dark). Then I used some 409 to clean it up, some swiffer dusters to grab as much dust as possible (I've been down some dirt roads/driveways) and called it a day.

Better than it was, thats for sure...

I'll get the outside washed and buffed up pretty before sunday. I've put over 600 miles on it and even though I've washed it and cleaned it, you can tell it's been driven.
