Re: 58 GMC Project

Ever find that rocker washer? Hope it did not fall into the black hole! I cant wait to finish the engine. We should be able to put it back together in the same amount of time it took to strip it down.

Re: 58 GMC Project

how many hours from the time you picked up your truck to present do you estimate that went into building your truck. and let me add they were hours well spent. topping this build is going to be tough. thanks for sharing it and the build.

That's gotta be some kind of milestone here! What kinda #'s are you going to be making (H.P.wise) after the addition of these parts? What are your goals or plans for the truck when the parts are on(now that you've showed it and got a few trophies under your belt!)? I'd like to show mine for a summer season of shows, but then its going to be used. Not for a work truck, but for a commuter/cruiser. I've come to realize these projects take on a life or direction of thier own as you begin the build. Thanks for setting the standard for the rest of us!

I hope to have between 340 to 360 hp. When I bought my motor it was advertized at 330 hp. Well It's not even close to that. I would be lucky if it were 250 hp, that's why I'm changing everything. You can't have a cool looking truck that's slow, right?. As for any future plans, I would like to install a four link. I should have went that route in the first place. I plan on doing a few out of town show such as Goodguy, Paso & Brothers.

I don't know if it's in the"black hole". I sure hope it not or I'm screwed.
It will take more time to put back then it did to tear down since were going to have to tork everything back down and adjust the valve's.

Re: 58 GMC Project

Okay CAL 58 GMC, this is getting ridiculous. As nice as your truck is and you can’t leave it alone. You have a really nice truck there Cal, and its only going be nicer (if that’s possible) with your changes. Did I tell you I went with a 4 link also and wasted all that money on leaf springs. Well I guess its all in a build right?

You better be careful cal, anymore power from that motor and you are going to need a stronger tranny than a 700r4 :P

I see, didnt you have a 700r4 but ended up buying that streetfighter or whatever? Are you sticking with your current shifter or have you thought about going with a ratchet shifter, I know have fun with mine. Also yes lots of progress on my truck I got all the leaks stopped. That shifter shaft seal was pretty annoying to change out but luckily I had a car lift to use. I also figured out why the truck ran so rough, I ended up having a vaccum leak between the carb and manifold, I guess that tends to happen when you forget to use rtv on the gasket. Now the truck runs really strong, there are quite a few tread marks around my block . Regarding the body I am going to go back and fix some of the low spots and dings I missed. Also im taking all of the crap reproduction parts: Door, and Fender off and using the original sheetmetal. I never intended on buying repro parts but was given those 2 things as presents. Sorry but reproduction is not the way to go it really is crap. I am going to end up repainting the whole truck in one shot, same color though. My truck was the first urethane paint my dad had shot so he shot it as if it was Lacquer which ended up turning out nice but not as nice as it could have. It needs more clear on it for the most part. Also painting candy which is transparent if you dont do it all at once you end up with different thickness no matter how good of a painter you are so it turns out a different shade if you look close enough. I guess these sort of things are what happens when you start building a truck at 18 and know nothing. Now that im a bit older and knowledgeable I already see so many of my failures haha. I will snap some pics of the chevy tonight.

Sounds like you have made some good progress. From all of the pictures you posted the paint looks good, is it really that bad?
