Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

I feel like an idiot. I called it tin can. I know better. It is oil canning. Does your dent puller have a shrinking tip on it? It looks like a mushroom. I've used it before to heat up an area and quench it with cold water. It works just takes practice. YouTube also has several videos on shrinking metal.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

This is awesome.
I cannot open a thread on someones build and not learn something!
College should be this easy, fun, applicable, and cheap!

If it was, maybe I would go...

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

Thanks for the help guys. Alan>I will have to go back down to the shop and look in the box and see if that mushroom shrinker is in there. It belongs to my cousin so im not real familiar with it. I dont have a torch set yet, just a small propane torch. I have heard of heating it up and sticking a wet rag on it to shrink it but I dont know exactly where I should heat it. I dont want to make it worse. I got it almost perfect now but it will still pop in with light pressure. good thing is it always pops back out by itself. I need to check out youtube tonight and see if any good shrinking tips on there. I wanted to work down in the shop tonight but I ran out of gas for the heater and its cold here tonight, low of 29 degrees.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

When I talked to Ron Covell he said "I don't like to quench it with something cold. I let it cool naturally." I didn't get it. He probably wanted me to buy his video.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

strodder> I looked at alot of metal working videos on youtube last night and it seems to be a pretty straight foward fix on this oil canning issue. Everyone was heating and cooling with a wet rag and hammer on dolly. I saw a guy on there doing it on the back of a cab with out a hammer or dolly and still fixed the problem. I guess ill be trying it next time I go down to the shop.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

as your uncle suggests i would prime the top of the cab and then you can take a small brush and paint around the drip rail, let it dry and then spread the seam sealer around the drip rail and then primer back over that and paint it later whatever color your going with.the reason your uncle suggests painting the drip rail first is to keep moisture from getting in the gutter surface rusting it and then it would push the seam sealer out away from it later on down the road causing water to start seeping in around the roof skin causing that famous rust over the windshield that plagues so many of the 60-66's.

Or just take the roof rails off like I did.

I think Im ready for 1st coat of filler primer on the rear of the roof but I found a few spots at the front I wasnt happy with so more filler and blocking before primmer. Been doing yard work all today so may get back to the truck in the next few days.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

I got my roof cab channel trimmed out in white today. Its ready for the seam sealer now when the paint drys good. I then washed the frame with some purple stuff cleaner/degreaser and a scuff pad. Its pretty clean and has small amout of rust here and there. Im not building a show truck nor have the time or money to do my frame up like a lot of you guys on here. The more I thought about the frame and looked at it I guess its probally cleaner right now than alot of newer cars and trucks on the road right now. So tomorrow im going to paint it with chassis black and then it will be ready for the cab.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

Thats exactly what I want my truck to look like. I love the stance of it too. Not to low to drive but sits nice and low. I love that color combo ever since I first saw these trucks when I was real little.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

chad, those mirrows do look good on our style trucks. I got my dura block kit today so maybe I can get back on my roof work this week. Time is just not on my side right now having 4 young daughters under 8. I have 2 sets of twin girls, one set 8 and other set 16 months. homework and babysitting in the evening until wife gets home and then supper and baths so not much time left for the truck. one of my 8 year old girls is showing interest in the truck so I think its time to let her learn how to do some sanding in the near future. Im already ready for spring time, I dont like this cold weather and getting dark at 5:00 oclock.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

Finally a free day and it was sunny with temp in the mid 50s. I rolled the truck cab out and sprayed 3 coats of full fill primer on it. Thats all I have done lately reguarding the truck. I went by carquest today and picked up some white base coat so I can trim out the roof channel before the seam sealer goes in. so on to the pics, 1st pic is the first coat and all other pics is after the 3rd coat. The last pic is where I had to do the metal shrinking to fix the oil can and dent.

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

Man that looks like it came out super straight! Just like new.
Good going, I am hoping with some filler and primer I can make my hack jobs look better than they are at this time.

Looking good man!

Re: My 64 C-10 fleetside shortbed build

I got the whole bottom of the cab scuffed up tonight ready for the last top coat of semi gloss black paint. I think im going to pressure wash my frame tomorrow and then friday if it gets into the mid 60s like they are saying it will, I hope to paint it with some chassis black and also paint the bottom of the cab. If I have time tomorrow Im going to trim the roof channel out in white so I can put the seam sealer in.
