Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
thanks guys, and no is the answer VT. I would have never imagined doing this to a truck last year when I bought it. My mechanical skills and motivation are slightly better than the average Joe but this is pretty extreme by some people's measure. I can't cover up rust though!
Did you see your old hitch in post #57? looks like new now and getting ready to bolt in now... If I had it to do over I would would buy a good Daily driver (like Special-K's K-20 for sale) and fix things as needed..... I consider this the easy part, the body work will suck for sure!

Wow, the frame looks awesome. I am afraid of tearing into my truck, it was "restored" by a guy in SD a few years back, and so far I have more than a few questionable things (engine is seriously screwy ('79 block mismatched heads) hidden body rust, tons 'o putty) At least the rust won't get any worse here in southern AZ

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
so I picked up my $75 in seals and bearings from napa the other day. The Junkyard 12 bolt posi was leaking oil out the pinion like a New Orleans levee....
The corp 10 front axle had crusty needle bearings and bad seals too.... Also a pic of the read add-a-leaf installed. Added 1.5" to the leaf pac before installation. New rea wheel studs where in order since I could only get 6 turns on the lugs with the MT's installed. These are 1/4 longer. Whats the best way to install? press, or just tighten down a lug nut to pull it tight?

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
Here's another job that's a PITA! The axle shaft u-joints were pretty stiff so for $15 each side I picked up some HD u-joints.... After a little elbow grease and a spray paint I think that they are in business now....

I have installed the studs both ways, but the using of the lug nut is the easiest but YMMV.

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
I did it that way today... I actually placed a lrger nut onto the stud (acted as a spacer) and then and old lugnut was driven on with an impact wrench...
Changed rear axle bearings and spindle bearings today... thank goodness for Auto Zone's tool rental program!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
Mike,
I have had good luck installing wheel studs using a open stock wheel nut reversed (flat surface in & no wheel ofcourse) and hitting them with an impact wrench. Just make sure the naruled portion of the stud will not come all the way threw the axle flange before you use this method, if it will place a couple washers over the stud first. Keep up the GR8 work RJ22... |

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
Alrighty, I finally got all my bearings and seals needed for the axles. Installed the rest of them tonight and am happy to see two axles installed again. I still need to weld the spring plates onto the axle once I get the engine, tranny and TC installed to set the pinion angle. Looks like the rear was raised about 1.5 - 2" from the add-a-leaf. The rear feels like a 3/4 ton now too since the spring pack is soooooo stiff. Who cares about ride quality, it's a 4x4!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!
Also got to finish up the front axle after NAPA came through with a bearing kit (#brgbk1). Since my 76 dana that I bought had good hub bearings I decided to keep them and just repack (WHAT A MESS!). The 76 donated the spindles, hubs, rotors and backing plates to the project. They mated nicely with the 82 corp 10 axle and shafts....
I didn't put the brake calipers on yet due to time but I had to get some wheels on her again.... So nice to see it out from jackstands! Now it's time to clean up the engine, tranny and TC to set it in the frame. Once I set the rear pinion then get it welded up and moved home to my garage before July.... wish me luck
