Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I have been busy this weekend.
I made another trip to the junk yard were I picked up a blazer gas tank, battery tray, vacuum canister and a rear sway bar. I also found a 3rd row seat for my suburban. I got the seat for $12.99 + tax--I almost fell over from shock. The other junk yards in town were charging between $300 and 400 bucks.

I spent sunday working on the bed. I followed LFD's low buck build. but on the front, I wanted to cut out all the body filler from where the gas door was, so I cut along the top edge and then cut down two inches from the front.

Thanks. I don't think I would have attempted the bed without the help of Low buck build. I will say It's harder than it looks, but it's a lot of fun. We'll see if I can put it back together.

I know. I really liked the long bed too. It was definitely a tough decision. I've been really stressed out at work and I needed something to take my mind off it.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

IT'S ALIVE!

The last thing I did today was start it up. I had to put the old gas tank in for now.
I spent all day Saturday welding the bed back together. I still need to weld half the inside.
I also finished the emergency brake and topped off the fluids.

I also bought some 1.5 inch wheel spacers from evil-bay. I got them for fifty bucks plus shipping. I'll post pictures when I get them.

Tuesday I had my driveline shortened, I had a driveline shop remove 12" from my front driveline. I used the heavy duty carrier barring.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I spent Saturday doing my brakes, along with a new soft brake line. Using a vacuum pump I blead brakes. One of the bleeders broke off, two of them were clogged, after another quick trip to the parts store, I replaced the bleeders.

Today I worked on tightening up the exhaust and my front swaybar. I also took it for a quick spin around the block. It felt really weird to drive such a short vehicle. I felt like I was missing something.

I think it looks like a road racing truck. They are 295/50 that are 12'' wide. I am going to put some smaller tires on the front like a 225/60. The best part is when I get some smaller front tires I have an extra set of rears.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I guess I should update my thread.

I found something on this truck that's not rusty! Last weekend I pulled the front and rear glass. The rear window frame is like new, but the front not so lucky. I spent Saturday grinding bed-welds and cleaned up the door jambs. I also worked on the windshield frame.

I also noticed my heater core is leaking, I must have bumped it when we removed the cab.

That windshield area looks great! I've got the same rust going on in my truck, I'll be hitting you up when I get around to fixing it, if you don't mind.

Looks great!

Thanks. No I don't mind at all. I used wire wheels and some stone grinding bits. The worst spots were in the corners.

Good luck with your truck.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Well I have come to the conclution that the cab lights have got to go. I know that they are different but they don't go along with my theme. This is going to get ugly.

I also removed the heater core and cleaned up the fire wall. I had a pretty good spot of rust by the motor. I had a whole bunch of junk that had made its way through the fan and was clogging the heater core.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

I made a plate for the speaker kick panel hole on the passenger side. I used fiberglass to glue it in and used a few self-tapping screws and them finished with a seam filler to fill any gaps. I've never seen anybody that had cut a hole in their cab like this.

I also need to make a plate for the inside.

I put my 22's on from my suburban--just for fun--I think they look a little big for the wheel base.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Thanks man. Yeah, those wheels are bad, they cost more than the truck. I do have some 17's that are currently on my 93 that I plan on running for a while. The tires that are on it in the picture are 265/35/22's. there's not much between me and the road, not to good for ride quality. I also don't have power brakes, each wheel weighs 38lbs + tire.

Re: 1971 Cheyenne "One For the Road"

Just checking in from midvale

Cool truck! I'm building a longbed but not chopping it to a shortbed. Did you have rust on the back side of the windshield frame?

Mine is terrible and I'm just wondering how you fixed it.

Keep up the good work!

Chris
