Re: Time for some longhorn love, show pics
Almost missed this thread. It was made by Red-Land Campers. An internet search turned up nothing on them, they may be out of business. My wife wants to replace it with a like kind. I will probably just have to build one, since they are all fiberglass now, it would appear. It's all rotten on top. Now that I'm retired, I have the time, will just have to scare up some cash.

As long as this came back to the top I will post a couple of pictures of my fantasy truck. I still have to finish the wood in the bed (I have it all cut and routed, and I finally picked up the long bed strips) and I have a few small pieces to paint and install. I have driven it to town and back a few times. The paint is 2000 Mazda "Dark True Blue". LockDoc

Re: Time for some longhorn love, show pics
Steeveedee, thanks.
SSTim, thanks. Who knows, maybe I'll look into it. Not really ready to build my own yet , but I'm thinking of how to use the truck when I retire. A shell on the back would make it better for camping use. I'll keep this in mind. Lock doc, nice truck Last edited by dads longhorn; 12-07-2014 at 09:55 AM. |

Re: Time for some longhorn love, show pics
I dug up this thread so I could post this combo, 72 Cheyenne Longhorn c20, 402 , a/c , with a 72 sportman 11 ft camper perched in the back. Might be a little much, I,ll need air bags for sure. Anyone know the gvw or payload of my truck.

Depending on how the truck was optioned it may be marked "as built" as low as 6200 /3500 front /3980 rear. Payload in simplified form is a matter of weighing your truck and subtracting it from the max "as built" weight posted. Published curb weight and option weights suggest your truck weighs at least 4565lbs with standard fuel and no occupants nor payload. Best case that would leave you about 2935lbs divided between people, camper (wet), equipment and any aux fuel tankage. Of course this is only an example and must be verified by measuring actual weights. Both the chassis service manual (pg 0-6 & 0-7) and the driver's handbook provide detailed loading and required options for specific GVW ratings. As to your camper, while it might be barely light enough empty its still big. Worse it is for a standard 8' bed pickup. The closed rear overhang prevents the camper from sliding fully forward and sharing more load with the front axle. The unfortunate fact is Longhorns typically required a custom size camper to fit the longer box and best balance the truck. Suspension rating aside, my guess is you are at if not over the rear axle's maximum rating 5200lbs as it sits. While airbags my level your camper they won't make the load lighter nor IMHO safer.

Re: Time for some longhorn love, show pics
Thanks for the info SS, I,ll get it weighed with and without the camper. It has a Dana 60 axle with factory overload springs, but I was still originally planning on putting this beast of a camper on a dodge dually. This time capsule combination just had me thinking crazy ideas.

Should have caught this writing my post, but of course your C20 Longhorn has a Dana 60 they all did IIRC. When a C20 was optioned with rear leaf springs a Dana 60 (H055) replaced the standard GM H052. Since a C20 Longhorn used the leafs as standard equipment the Dana 60 also became standard. What is interesting is the manuals I have checked (service and driver's) all show only the 5200lb rating for the rear axle on a CS-CE21034 even though it has the heavier 5500lb rated axle. The kicker here is the truck VIN plates I reviewed also show a 5500lb rating as max for the rear axle. So it is reasonable to assume that a 5500lb max rear axle rating applies to your truck given HD springs and suitable tires. 7500GVW /3500front /5500rear Myself I am still looking for "the" C30 to get the extra payload. But then I plan at running 9k+ all up.

Re: Time for some longhorn love, show pics
Tim, I've had 3 Longhorns with Ho52's. They were all pre 72, 1 was a big block truck, and 2 were small block trucks. I've noticed most of the big block longhorns got the D60 with 3:54 gears. I heard from a couple of guys that collect 67-72s and they said if you got a big block C20, you got the D60. Obviously there's more to it than that though.
