Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Thanks for asking! Man it's been a busy summer, Yard work on the acreage, working on all my other vehicles.. But with the help of my welder friend, I did make some progress. My buddy Brent talked me out of the hokey square tubing gusset I had cut to fit and He welded in a nice clean gusset for the front hangers. He also welded in a flat piece on each side of the frame where there had been the stepped out holes for the park brake cables which were conflicting with the shackle hangers sitting flat against the frame. I test fit the shackle hangers and leafs and it all looked good so I took it all apart again to buff the frame for paint. Next on the list is the 4wd motor mounts.

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Can't really see in this picture, but I got really lucky and the shifter linkage bracket that's bent up out of the way in this picture, bends back down and lines up perfectly with one of the shackle hanger bolts. ..I mean, I'm that good and I meant for that to happen! lol

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
I wanted a reminder of how cool it'll look as a 4x4, so I slapped everything in place and stood back to ponder.. Can't wait to get the 3/4 ton diffs from my brother, that'll look even better!

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Well I WAS going to buy my little brothers truck for it's 14 bolt and Dana 44, but I just found this 1 ton crewcab with two other parts trucks all for $500. Comes with a 1978 3/4 ton 2wd Suburban and a 1980 halfton 2wd truck. Guess my 68 is getting a Posi 14 bolt and a Dana 60 now..

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Brought my Dana 60 and 14 bolt home today (crewcab) along with the two other parts trucks that I had to take since it was an all or nothing deal.. Correction on the years, the Burb and 1/2 ton are 1980 models. Also came with a 2wd 3/4 ton frame with a TH400 and another 14 bolt. I got more parts then I know what to do with!

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Bought a 67 GMC off my brother in law for $300, and it runs! (6cyl, 3spd) My thinking was that since it's the same color as my Burb, I might use the matching patena fenders and hood for a while so I don't have to do any bodywork or paint right away. Also this way I won't have to paint my brand new fenders till I'm ready to paint the whole truck.. feeling kinda guilty about taking this thing apart, especially since I also have a nice solid box that I could throw on it.

Looks familiar I bought this one last year for parts. It's long gone now.

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
So I was talking to the owner of a local transmission shop today and He was VERY disappointed to hear that I was planning to use a 700R4 my 68 Burb. (3/4 ton 4x4 with a mild smallblock) He said that it won't hold up. I realize that it's not as strong as a TH400, but I want to have the best of both worlds with low speed towing gears (4:10's) while still keeping my RPM's down on the highway with an overdrive tranny. My 76 Blazer has 4:10's and an overdrive and so does my 02 Suburban and I love this gear ratio/tranny combo. This tranny shop guy advised me to go with a TH400 and a higher speed rear end.
Any thoughts on the reliability/longevity of the 700R4? The 700R4 in my 2wd 76 Blazer has been awesome for the last 7 years, but I realize it's a much lighter vehicle and doesn't do any towing..

Re: My first 67-72! (68 Burb)
Sadly, none of GM's o/d tranny's are really worth a lick unless you toss a bag o money in them. I've got a 700/3:73's combo in my Blazer and like it, my '97 has a $3000 4l60e after the stock tranny pooped at 170 000 kliks, with the parts in it my tranny guy says to plan on never worrying about it. He has a 4l80e in his Chevelle (Blown 496 cid).
I'd put a BIG cooler on it and run it. Nice horn in your 76 by the way lol.

Thanks, I scarred the crap out of the guy driving beside me, but it's not every day I see another lowered orange and white Blazer driving by me, so I used the big horn..
