Being satisfied with what you do is important. However, there will come a day that you will decide that the income is important. Most of us will be there sometime in our lives.

Do something you love and you'll never work another day in your life again.

Re: what do you guys do?

I'm retired, worked 31 years in a factory. Most of the time I was in the maintence dept. My last 5 years I spent there were the worst I took a line formans job. caught He-- from bosses and the workers finally I just signed the papers and walked out. Now I play in my garage and take care of the house and yard because my wife is a RN and works 12 hours on the graveyard shift.

Re: what do you guys do?

I'm 20, and trying to build something my parents never did. I have worked for a BMW dealer for 2.5 years, work part time for a pest control company, and go to college more than full time. I am going to school for an AAS in Fire Technology. When I can catch some free time I am going to take EMT classes then Firefighter classes. In a way I'm keeping the options open in case something doesn't work out in my favor.

I went into the Air Force straight out of high school and became a nerd. I am a communications and network computer tech/security specialist. I retired from the USAF and now I work there as a teacher in the nerd schools.

One must know his place in life.....Are you sure that you are a nerd?

Need to do a check:

Pocket protector
heavy framed glasses----with tape holding them together
weezy laugh
white shirt---tie
vacation with large print Hawaiian shirts

nah, wasn't me larry.....i would have to get up out of my huge padded control room chair to do that. you know how us operators are..........besides,to fill a bucket you would need at least a full face mask and probably a self contained breathing unit.that stuff is so nasty d.o.t wont allow it to be trucked on the road.one drop will clear out a wal mart sized building.a bucket full would ruin your day. i don't think alot of area folk's realize how dangerous that place is.

Re: what do you guys do?

I started out fixing cars part time and going to college full time for aircraft repair. I got my degree and Airframe and Powerplant licenses and worked a few years on planes and helicopters. I hated it something fierce. After quitting that I worked in a GM dealership as a line tech then ended up at the post office as a mechanic on postal trucks. The money was so-so but the long term outlook had me working a lot of years before being eligible to retire. All told, I spent 12 years as a mechanic.

So I quit all that and went to fire school and paramedic school and got hired on at the fire department and have now promoted to mid level position (engineer). I tell anyone who will listen to consider the fire service as a career. The 24/48 schedule is very nice leaving a lot of time to do stuff on your days off. The pay, in my opinion, is excellent. A rookie at my department hires in at 56k a year and gets bumped to 62k after he makes his one year probation period. As you promote, the pay increases right along with it. My city matches your retirement contributions 2 for 1 so your retirement really stacks up fast.

To illustrate that, we had a guy retire recently at 50 years old and his retirement is 6200 dollars a month net take-home. I have 13 years before I'm there, but it gets closer every day.
