Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Turning out super clean! Was hoping to see the smaller sport mirrors on this one but it looks great. I like the seat. Black door panels, trim, & dash?

The mirrors were one of the tougher decisions. The ones I had were in good shape so I just reused them. The interior is all black.

You did a ton of work in a pretty short amount of time and it looks great. I like the combination of stock and custom features. Also, echoing 91short -- thank you for serving. One of my best friends is career Marine Corps. You guys sacrifice a lot.

Since you raised your bed floor, the rear wheel tubs will probably need sectioned like ones in these pictures. I am producing them in fiberglass if you need a set. Here's a link to my thread:

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear

Why do you think the extreme drop member would be easier and involve less fab?

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear

I just trimmed the inner part of the factory tub and bolted them back in place. plenty of clearance with the amount I raised the bed.

slotard - I went with the Mild version because I was under the assumption that there was no modifications to the cab necessary. With my setup I had to fab a tunnel from front to back for drive shaft clearance. My main issue was the steering linkage. The stock column sticks out fairly far and causes the first joint angle to be a little extreme. Other then that, the install was pretty straight forward. So since I had to do all the modifications anyway, I think the extreme version would have been easier for the simple steering connections and header fitment.

How did you connect your first u-joint at the steering column? Did you cut a piece of steering shaft stock and mount it in the residing location, and then mount the u-joint to that?

No. The factory column has a DD shaft end already. These columns usually have the DD end or a splined end.

Thanks for the response. Mine does hav ethe DD end. When I ordered my PB front kit several years ago I ordered through CPP Classic Performance Parts. They sent me their rack and pinion and steering kit. The kit came with a u-joint that fits the rack. The second u-joint doesn't fit my stock steering DD end. The u-joint has a 3/4 DD on both ends. I just now tried to put it on the stock steering DD end but the u-joint 3/4DD opening wasn't large enough. My stock end is larger.

Did you modify or what u-joint did you use?

Re: 86 GMC, Porterbuilt Mild front and rear

I believe you need a 1” dd to 3/4” dd u joint. I bought all of my gear through Porterbuilt. I did end up getting some extra u joints because of the geometry of the shafts.
