Yep, I imagine more things will show as I put miles on it. Luckily only cost me $75 for a reman one from AutoZone. Starts so much easier and quieter now!

Now the one brake light that was working no longer does, in addition to the reverse lights no longer working???? I'm assuming on these it would be a ground issue?

Trans level is a little high, but it is shifting and all properly. I'm guessing from sitting the pan gasket on the trans dried up. After driving it about 70 miles, its starting to drip from the bolt heads on the pan. Can't tell if it's from the opening that the bolt goes through or if its leaking out the gasket and down and just finding the bolt head as that is the lowest place before dripping off.

Figured out this is all related to the turn signal switch assembly. Before today the horn would come on if you pulled the post toward you or like when signaling for a left turn. Pulled steering wheel off and cleaned up what was a nasty, dirty and corroded turn signal switch. Got it all cleaned up and now turn signals work along with the brake lights. Unfortunately, post will still activate horn and the rear passenger brake light will work depending on position of the post. It appears that the switch grounds on itself somewhere when the post is moved around. So I ordered a new switch and wiring harness and will get it put in when it arrives and hopefully that will solve the brake light/ turn signal/ reverse light issues.

Re: Bringing my Grandfather's 1972 Longbed Stepside C10 back to life

Well now ended up with only 30psi in the #8 cylinder due to an exhaust valve issue. So instead of putting money into an engine without known history or mileage, I ordered a reman 350 which I can use all the accessories I have already purchased. Looking forward to getting a motor in there with a little bit more power and *hopefully* more reliable. Of course I will update as I make progress!

Re: Bringing my Grandfather's 1972 Longbed Stepside C10 back to life

Got the new turn signal switch installed, which has fixed all the turn signal and taillight issues. Also got the horn stuff in correctly so the horn only honks when I want it to. Also got motor mostly torn down and ready to come out after the motor mount bolts, bell housing bolts and torque converter bolts are removed.

I'm glad the switch worked out. Used engines are always a gamble. I'm sorry it didn't work out. But, it work good enough for you to drive grandpa's truck!

I was wondering who you ordered the engine from, looks like I also have a dead cylinder

Jegs, only place that had one that was in stock. They have a few others showing end of May or end of July shipment. The one I ordered was an ATK one. Also Jegs was best price, some places want $2,700 for a long block plus a $800 core charge! One I ordered was $2,100 for long block and a $400 core. They are all stupidly priced now though. Just a couple years ago you could get a nice reman 350 for less than $2,000 including core charge. Sucks but I'll have more power and better reliability now. Plus while taking stuff off this 305, it became more apparent how poor of shape it was in when draining all the fluids.

Re: Bringing my Grandfather's 1972 Longbed Stepside C10 back to life

Well, the 305 is back out of the truck. Am now waiting on the new motor to get here. The more we took off the 305, the better I am feeling about buying a new motor. That oil has only 105 miles on it, that just shows how dirty that thing was inside.

It should be delivered tomorrow, and yea without him and his garage this wouldn't have been possible!
