Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
These are some really good looking camping rigs. I would love to find something like these now that my boys are old enough to go camping.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
Looked at a camper today but I passed as for now. It was pretty nice to be a 1968 camper but still too much work to get it in shape to match my truck. Well if it doesn't sell I might consider making him an offer.
1968 Camp Mate Executive.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
Here's one for sale on the Phoenix Craigslist that I shared with jocko a few weeks ago. No interior pics though. The truck looks really nice. I keep thinking I should take a look at it, but I'm definitely not in the market.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
Thx for sharing again, that's a nice one for sure. Seems it's easier to find trucks with campers than just the campers... I do a troll for vintage slide-ins every so often on CL and there's not a lot out there (that isn't beaten to death). Reality is that I feel the need to finish (ok, start...) on my 72 before I buy the camper. But if the right one comes along, may have to pitch in. Really wish I had more time to do anything these days!

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
Here's different pic of mine that I showed in posts 3, 4 and 6 that was taken in Joshua Tree National Park in 1970. I still have the truck, camper and young lady standing on the bumper. The bike was sold in 1975.

Still have the truck, camper and woman? That's impressive on all counts! I've only been married 35 years.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
When I was 10 years old (1969) the family all 7 of us, come down the Al-Can highway in a 1968 Chevy 3/4 with a bell canopy on Dad's truck towing a travel trailer down to the lower 48 states. Spent all that summer in that set up until school started, ended up in Boise Idaho for two years, than up to Northern Idaho where my Dad grew up. Miss Dad's old red '68 truck. Dad did a lot of heavy work with that truck.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
When my grandpa got my truck brand new, he got a Pullman Camper. I wouldn't mine putting one back on like that one! Picture is my dad at Carlsbad when you used to be able race in motocross. A couple of FMF Honda Elsinore factory 250s fit in that camper too! Wish we still had those!

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
Back around '72 +/- Dad rented a camper to take us down to the Eastern States Fair and spend a week there. He had to put air bags in the springs of his '68 C-10 to handle the weight. Made it to Massachusetts and back with no problems, thought I do remember that truck swaying scarily even as a youngster. When we got back to our home in So. Maine, Mom was given the task of returning the camper to the rental dealer. The truck needed gas so she stopped at her usual place - an old fashioned gas station with a low roof on the inner pumps and no roof on the outer edge. She went to the pump she was used to going - yup, the inside lane. Bam! The roof of the station held firm, but the 2x6 roof framing punctured the roof of the camper cleanly in 3 locations on the front edge and the force of the impact slid the camper back 18" in the truck bed. The camper anchors held. Well, she got some assistance, put fuel in the truck and drove it back to the farm with the camper 18" further back than it should have been. The camper was removed in the barn and Dad ended up buying that camper (no insurance) and selling it for pennies on the dollar a few months later with no repairs done.

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
I really love the look of the campers on our trucks, but they seem like they would really make the truck unstable. Top heavy?

Re: Period Camper Tours - show us!
My 7500# GVWR 1969 3/4 ton has coil springs and was quite unstable with the 11' (floor length) camper I've posted in posts 3, 4 & 85. I added air bags in the rear coils (mainly to level side to side), a Hellwig rear sway bar, and 12X16.5 rear tires. I later replaced the part time factory auxiliary rear springs with a full time Hellwig overload setup. It was OK when driven in a careful manner, but there were still some white knuckle moments. However, after rocking a rear leaf spring 69 Ford and camper stored next to mine in the RV storage lot, I wished my truck had leaf springs. I eventually bought a 1986 Chevy dually (see post #6) and will never carry a heavy camper on anything less. I now have an 11.5" Lance camper and have hauled it on 2 Duramax duallies. They really kick butt!
