Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I decided to decode my block before I send it out to have it checked. Checked on the archived Mortec http://web.archive.org/web/200805180...ww.mortec.com/ and nastyz28.com. If anyone sees anything I am decoding wrong, let me know...but looks like it verifies as a correct engine for the truck.
Casting 3969854 means it's a 402 BB from 70-72. THe E4*71 shows the block itself was cast on May 4th, 1971. Can't read anything else on the block so not sure when it was assembled or where...but seems to fit a 72 model truck 402.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Also confirmed I wanted the AM/FM pictured today
Getting it from the Cheyenne super man. He's now providing me with two bezels, two restored glovebox doors, two sets of woodgrain inserts including polishing the retainers around the woodgrain, a restored console, and the radio. I have a really nice console and an extra set of buckets. Going to put together a complete cheyenne super interior for some lucky buyer including a tac w/ speedwarning dash Once I sell some more parts I'll be able to buy some more I did get 5 tach dashes including the above mentioned speedwarning in today to restore

I am pretty much done touching the truck until the patch panels get welded in. I want to leave the doors on for test fitting and windows/windshield in case he needs to push it outside for another project to come in. Then I'll get it back and take it down to bare metal and do the body work on it. After that it'll be ready for paint and reassembly. Easy, right

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Getting a black rear slider for the truck from the brother of the previous owner. It's almost new and they are giving me an excellent deal. I might try my hand at rebuilding the stock one in the truck now but I want to paint it black anyways after seeing one with the stainless trim around it at a car show. Looked sharp! This way I'll have the stock one if the next owner wants it but it will look better to me

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Looking forward to getting all my woodgrain, a restored console, and the AM/FM probably early next week!!!
Ordered a paper and rubber kit for the trans and a 30yr master trans tech is going to go through it for me to check it also. Jason is going to go through the engine and do leak down and compression tests on it to make sure all is good and if we have any suspicions I'm sending the heads to be hot tanked and checked. Dropping the truck off tentatively next Thursday for him to start welding in the patch panels. Things should really start to move in this build after that. And the best thing is...when It's painted I'm going to have all or almost all of the parts ready to bolt right in

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Well, going to be a little hiccup....had my tranny picked up yesterday with a paper and rubber kit to be put in....the guy tore into it to make sure it all looked good and the 2nd servo pin had been broken in two and all the 2nd gear clutches were fried.
So...i'm going to look for another tranny. I could get it fixed but it's not worth it for me....would rather sell this for parts and find a good one I can freshen up...will be cheaper in the long run. I'm really actually Hoping the guy I got it from will swap one out because this one was supposed to be good. Also looking at a couple local but trying to find one from a 72 to keep it original since the block and everything else is so far....

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Too bad about the tranny. I know your looking at keeping it all 72, but a 4 speed auto would sure be a nice upgrade.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I really want to keep this one all original...the more I've been finding nice original parts the more it's made me want to. The only thing it won't get will be a step bumper and the olive interior
It's just such a special, desireable truck I feel it's the only way to do it right....and assure I get top dollar for it when sold.

Too bad about the tranny, but it's a break you found out about it now. Can the case still be used if you find another?

I've been trying to plan ahead so there are no holdups at the end of the project. Like most the final bodywork/paint are my biggest X-factor right now... I will be checking out the motor with Jason's help in a couple weeks...hope that goes better than checking out the tranny

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Thanks guys! Haven't done much so far and haven't even touched the truck in a few days....but rebuilding and selling tachs and bucket seats to fund the build further....looking for a good Turbo400, and buying parts.
Will be picking up the slider next week and hope to have my woodgrain interior parts soon thereafter. Friday is hopefully the big day for the welding to begin. Getting it transported to the shop Thursday night. It looks like I'll be using the nice original bed so I'll be working on that as well (really wanted to be lazy and use a repop I'm going to set the motor into place to make it easy to transport it over and we'll be going through that at the same time... I have picked up a few important parts in the last week
