Looks like a nice truck man. We all have those pictures though. I have some that make it look worse too.

Re: lowered shortbeds on stock wheels?

subscribing to this awesome thread . im thinkin the McGaughy's 73-87 Deluxe 4 1/2" Front / 6" Rear Drop for my 81 stepside. anyone got any comments about this kit ? it seems like a really good price. im new to these trucks (was into mustangs for yrs) and ive been doin alot of searching and reading and looking at pics to decide on a direction i wanna go with this wreck. lol . im liking the slammed on 20" Coys look but just isnt very realistic for the roads here in PA and i wanna drive it every day. so i was thinkin a kinda drag/street rod look , 4-6 drop on 15" wheels with the biggest drag radial i can stuff in the back.

This is my 1986 GMC Sierra Classic, C1500, SWB, 2WD. Completed drop January 2010.

Before: Stock suspension with 15" x 8" Rallies and 255/70R-15 Firestone Indy 500s.

After: Mild drop: 2.5" drop spindles (Western) and 4" drop hangers and shackles (McGaughys). KYB Gas Adjust shocks in front and LMC drop shocks in back. Used same 15" Rallies with 255/70R-15 Firestone Indy 500s.

Additionally, rebuilt entire front suspension and reused A arms and coil springs. New tie rods, ball joints, control arm busings, idler arm, pitman arm. Rear suspension: Reused leaf springs.

Much tighter ride/less body roll and yet very comfortable.

Re: lowered shortbeds on stock wheels?

Thanks. For the rear, just remember you will need to trim your bed's cross support just above the new lowering shackles as they will stick up. This is a simple matter of cutting with an air grinder or even a dremel tool (with cutting blade). I hate to chop up such a "classic" truck but it's hidden from view. Make sure you cut the support areas wide enough to accomodate the entire length of the top shackle nuts & bolts. Otherwise, as the leaf spring flexes, the nuts & bolts will make contact with the bed. I know this from experience. Later, I'll post some additional pics of my new front suspension parts (on and off the truck) for reference. Currently using a friend's laptop. Good luck with your suspension drop.

Thanks, hopefully it will turn out as good as yours. I'm still debating on the flip kit though.

I looked at a bunch of options to do a mild drop for my truck, including doing a flip for the rear. Keep in mind the flip will drop your rear about 5" and you may have to trim the rear bumper stops. This is based on what I read and not through experience. If this is the case, you will probably need to drop the front end at between 3-3.5" to that both front and rear drops appear level.

If you noticed my 2.5" front drop and the 4" rear drop, they look pretty level. Even up close it looks pretty good and level. This set up has been done by many and it a proven combination -- without any issues to suspension or geometry. Like I mentioned earlier, the only thing I had to do was to cut away some of the bed support pieces to accomodate the taller drop shackles. I've read that some drop spindles of 3" had issues with caliper clearances but some minor grinding will resolve that issue.

You can also go with drop "A" arms which are good but you will need to spend some cash. I wanted to keep everything pretty stock looking so I reused my "A" arms and rebult them.

On that note, here's what $1000 looks like. Additionally, I included some pics of the taller shackles for your reference.
