Re: Shop improvements and upgrades. Better Space!

Not sure of the real name of them but it is what we have always called them. they are pretty large, about the size of an adult thumb. They are not aggressive like the white faced hornets we have around here. The white faced ones will chase you and keep stinging you until you get away or pass out from the stings. The yellow ones seem to keep near the cattle eating the bugs right out of the air. The build giant nests similar to the picture here. The one they have in his garage office upstairs is stuck right to the wall of the office and was about 3-4' tall and 18" diameter last time I saw it. I don't go up there anymore bc the building has fallen into disrepair. I have them come in my shop every once in a while and unless you mess up and hit one without killing it, they won't bother you. you can swat at them to just get them out and they still wont become aggressive. I try not to kill them because of the bug eating they do.

I am not sure if the picture I have posted is the exact one but it is pretty close. Just a random pic off the net. I have asked them several times to sit still for a pic and it never works out

.

I'm glad we don't have hornets that big up here.

I didn’t. All the reviews I read talked about clearing out a small area in a porch or house attic, which would be a pretty small area. Since this building is 60 x 100 feet and has a fairly steep roof pitch, it has a lot of cubic volume to impact with some sound generators. So, instead of spending money on a great number of those, I decided to put the money toward sealing up the building.

The bat expert was here, looked it all over and explained the bats can squeeze through an area 3/8” x 5/8”. I’m gonna fix this permanently, so he should be here in a couple weeks to seal up all the entry points. There is a lot of linear feet there.

And the builder will be coming back to soffit in the gable ends, sealing that area as well. Take that you stupid crapping bats!

Then we will do something to make the floor look good again. Really p.o. about the staining.

Re: Shop improvements and upgrades. Better Space!

I don't have much issue with these hornets. They will 99% of the time leave you alone but have been know to make people hurt themselves trying to get away from them

The white face ones are the devil though. You can cut your eyes at them from 50 ft and they think you need to be stung.... then stung again and again........ and you will look like you have golf balls under your skin.

Me neither! Serious effort to fix this...

So we got a little bit of a start in the battle of the bats. Builder is back with his man lift towed by the custom bed side truck.

They will install the gable end soffits, sealing that area off from the pesky bats.

Re: Shop improvements and upgrades. Better Space!

OK, so the bats won’t be getting through there anymore. And it looks better finished out too. West gable end done today and they should do the East end tomorrow.

Then the bat guy comes back to seal up about 380 linear feet of gap around the top of the wall.

Anyway, a step closer to bat proof. East gable end is done. And the bat guy will be here next week to seal up all the little gaps.

Re: Shop improvements and upgrades. Better Space!

Boy, do you have a nice shop!
Lots of work gone into it, I can see that.
I have seen your “old” shop in pics, but didn’t know this was behind it. Its doubled the space now?
I live in the middle of a small city and have to drive 3 miles to get at my shed, when I take the bicycle it is half of that....
So, I’m jealous!

But not of your bats...
We have them here too, I see them flying around, don’t know where they come from. I think from the nearby park (I hope).
Hope you get rid of them and keep your things clean.

Thanks Kees! Yes, the back half was there and with the upgrades it is like space has been doubled since it is so much more usable. We are very fortunate and I just walk across the road to get to the shop. Three miles would be tough, though I watched you build a very cool truck in a friends carport. Can’t beat skill and determination!

We are having fun with it too. Boys were bowling with lawn mower tires and water bottles.

You bet Mike. We will have some good times on projects over the next several years!

The bat guy was here today sealing up all the gaps the old fashioned way...with a ladder. Heat index warnings out today and kept checking on him to make sure he was OK. Nice hardworking young guy. He only has about 20 feet to finish up tomorrow.

He put in two, one-way bat valves. One of the valves is at the top of the clear plastic tube.

Bats can check out and they can’t check back in....hopefully. Keeping fingers crossed.

Working on organizing my shop better. Building an office space, closing in my area to climate control a smaller area. Trying to make it easier on myself.

Organization is hard for me to do. Office space and climate control will be really handy. Good luck with your project!

Here is a video of the cattle hornets I mentioned earlier. The hive in this car is about half the size of the one in my neighbors garage

Holy cow! Your friend may have to burn the building down!

In other news, I am not noticing any new patterns of guano so hopefully this has worked! Will do a good cleaning up this week end and continue to monitor.

Happy Labor Day!

Dang ..that's a big ol nest...reminds me of one I got into a couple yrs ago at the hunting club....dang things built a nest in a ground level shooting house...I went by on my tractor and they covered me up..they got me 7 times before I could get away.....I slipped back in there a couple days later and stuck 2lbs of tannerite in the window...a shot from my 25.06 sent em to hornet hell...the 4x4 house was about 1/3full of nest...

Fingers crossed here for you Doug...maybe that'll be the last of em....

Re: Shop improvements and upgrades. Better Space!

Thanks Greg.

It rained pretty heavy and with the back door open a low spot channeled a good amount of water in.

All good for scrubbing out some guano. Hopefully there won’t be any more!
