Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

Picked the frame up from sandblast and powder coat a couple weeks ago. The powder coat shop drilled holes for my ORD steering box brace, powder coated brace, cleaned up a couple welds, filled and re-drilled bumper mount holes, straightened frame in rear, and blasted the exhaust manifolds. Really happy with how it turned out.

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

Got the engine and transmission crossmembers bolted back on the frame yesterday. Id like to torque them down today. Anyone know the torque specs for frame crossmembers and miscellaneous frame bolts? Also, should I be using threadlocker on these bolts? Thanks

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

Don't know if your using 5/16, 3/8 or 7/16 but you should use Grade 8 bolts nuts and loc washers, note the zinc chromate finish, the bolts will have the 6 lines on the head of the bolt.

This is exactly what I picked up at tractor supply. Grade 8 yellow zinc chromate. Thanks for the chart.

Do you guys recommend I use threadlocker on the frame bolts? If so, what kind should I look for? Thanks

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

Here's my take on the subject, your buying grade 8 bolts, most Nyloc nuts are grad 5 or grade 2, plus the only part that lock's on the bolt is the nylon, i would try and find steel deformed thread lock nuts if your insistent on a loc nuts.

I would just use the loc washers and permanent loctite

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

If you use loctite, don't use the red permanent,it is PERMANENT! use the blue,it is good and you can get the nuts back off at a later time....

Unfortunately I haven't got much done on the truck lately. Kind of at a stand still until I find some axles. I did go pick up some blue loctite, so hopefully I can get the frame bolts torqued down this weekend.

Nick, did you check with Tom up in Phoenix? He usually has axles around his place.

Tom, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/member.php?u=966

I'll be in Sierra vista the first week in May, love to see the project.

Yeah I got a hold of Tom, but he didn't have what I was looking for right now.

Yeah I'm still trying to find a 71-72 14 bolt rear and dana 44 front with discs. Most of the stuff I've found is 73+. Trying to make it a simple bolt in swap since I don't have any welding equipment or experience. I have a mechanic friend that could probably do it. If I can't find what I'm looking for I may just have to have him relocate spring perches/shock mounts.

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

Ok, so I'm ready to get this project moving again. Got a little sidetracked the last few months. Tom up in Phoenix has a 14 bolt rear with detroit locker and 10 bolt front with discs in 4.10 gears for $700. Came out of a 76. Anyone have any advice on the 10 bolt vs a d44?

Also I'm looking to buy a lift kit and get that installed on the frame. Would like new springs all around, probably 4" lift with 35's. Thought some of you might have advice on what companies to look into. Skyjacker, Tuff Country? Let me know what you would recommend. Not looking to do any hardcore wheeling, just occasional off-roading for hunting, etc. More concerned with ride quality than anything else.

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

You could look into BDS for lift springs or SDtrucksprings.com also Offroad design for springs and shackles

Re: 1970 K20 Restoration

The truck I am working on has Rough Country suspension on it. Looks pretty good. You can swing by and check it out if you want. I also have all the parts I used for the disk upgrade.

Right on, I'd like to check that out sometime. How much did the disc upgrade run you? Dana44 front I'm assuming?
