Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
A new complete set of planetarys are over $100. So if a yard will let you yank just them out, I would do that. Around here complete rear ends in the yards are $150-$200. But if you could find a complete rear end with the gear ratio you wanted, and a bonus posi, I would go that route.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
No worries. You shouldn't have much trouble finding a complete rear end. Finding one with a posi might be a little tougher, but I'd bet you could go looking and find a suitable complete one in one day.

Yeah just take your time. You seem to have a good idea of what you want, and from what you have done so far, and the attention to detail I don't think you will be regretting much!

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
menace...could you please tell me what torque numbers you used on your front crossmember? If you used lower springs do you happen to know the height of the spring? I am re-doing mine and I'm not sure what spring is in the truck. Mine are 12" high.
thank you! |

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
alright, crossmember to side rail:65lbs. crossmember to bottom rail:100lbs. all i have to measure are the stock coils that have 1 coil cut off which is approx. a 2" drop. 12 5/8".

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
i have decided to go with the crate 350 that i have.(smog reasons and my dad purchased this motor new) i already have edelbrock performer carb, intake w/egr, and shorty headers w/ air tubes. im going to get the performer heads ? and performer cam to go w/ everything else. serpintine set-up w/ electric fans and underdrive pulleys i hope will get me close to my 300 hp # and stay smog legal. backed w/ the 700r4. going to run the 10 bolt until i get tired of rotating tires
right now im trying to figure out what options i have for the rear disc. i ordered 1 kit but decided to go w/ something else. any ideas??

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Man that rear end came out looking amazing. Your attention to detail, and just the nice additions of accents here and there are
So now that you have all that new tile, it looks to me that parts would look good sitting there waiting their turn for installation! I'm sure your wife is like mine, and would probably cost me a night on the couch for even bringing it up! I'm considering the disc rear setup too. Not real high on the list, but always an option. I know a few guys have used the blackbirds one. Do you know if you could do something with the rearend out of one of the 99-Up trucks? |

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
john, thanks buddy! yea our wifes sound alot alike. im buying the parts as i need them so it doesnt look so bad on the bank account and if i start letting them pile up she's going to start wondering "well how much was all that?" and i can research on the forum the right stuff to buy a little at a time. as for the rear brakes i want a kit that is going to match in looks to the front. my options are kind of limited since i want to use my 15" slots on occasion. still researching...

Well when you find something out let me know. On both accounts the brakes and how to keep the wife at bay about the purchasing of parts!

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Nice looking rear-end
Did you buy pre-maid brake lines for it, if not where did you get the wire, anti-abrasion stuff from?

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
john, we'll do!
sbtork, i reused my old lines. i plugged them off and sandblasted (real gentle) steelwooled, cleaned w/ brake cleaner, and sprayed them out w/ compressed air. then etch primed them and painted. a bit of work and not sure if i can salavage the rest to the front but they sure look good. ive seen the protective stuff in one of my catalogs . i'll look it up and let u know.

The little by littles add up and go a long way! You can already tell that and you have just done the frame.
