Re: 56 Cameo build
Working on the air filter. Not going to do anymore until we fit the hood. We may have to alter the cross braces.
Got a 53" driveshaft and used 2 conversion ujoints to mate the 4L60 to the Chevelle rear. Cheap fix. Need to get serious on the wiring. Ordered some spade terminals for the ignition switch and ring ends for the insulated block on the firewall. Started tweaking the single window before finishing the bearcat latches. May need a bigger hammer. tbrown |

Re: 56 Cameo build
Finished the radiator hoses. Since I used the camaro radiator we used that top hose, then went to the parts store and got hoses off the wall with the right bends, added a couple of sleaves, and it came out pretty well.
Working on the door latches, linkage, and locks. Lots of fine tuning but they are going to work well. Tweaked the one piece side windows to fit the opening better. Used a piece of masonite as a template and bent the tracks to improve travel. Also removed the rear channel the winder rolls in and tilted it to line up the glass when it's up. Doing all the wiring I can until I need help and will be asking questions on the site. |

Re: 56 Cameo build
Yes, it is metal. If you go back to the last page what we had done in cardboard is now metal with an edge around it. Will probably take it to a friend for some graphics or a Rembrandt.

Re: 56 Cameo build
Time for an update. Almost done under the hood. Fans wired with relays and all lights wired up. Still need a gas line to see if it will run.
I got a set of slugs for the cameo taillights off the internet a while ago so after hours of filing and sanding you can see the results. Not looking too bad and the fit is pretty good. going to check at a couple of chroming shops to see about chroming. Haven't heard much good about chroming aluminum. On to the wipers next and will try a rear wiper setup from a blazer. |

Re: 56 Cameo build
Good point Kim. I do have the wheel and polishing compound but was going to see what the plater says. It has been a lot of work but looks like the end result may be worth it. They are about $1500 to buy a finished set.

Re: 56 Cameo build
So how did the air cleaner system turn out ?
I'm using a Chevy chassis and rad support along with a 2001 Camero Rad & Fan assembly on my '56 GMC "Cameo" or '57 GMC long bed. Oh and 5.3L , 4L60E , Gear Vendors , 9" Ford with 4.11 gears and 28" tires. Depending on which GMC I use it will still be a long wheel base. If I use the "Cameo" I'll move the rear wheel opening back about 8". I'm thinking about reversing the intake manifold and putting the tube toward the fire wall and then using a 4 bbl hat to make a tighter transition to a metal Caddy style air filter assembly. Or if that doesn't work then I'll leave the manifold in the stock position and use a SSR air filter assembly mounted above the rad and use a GMC hood to get cold air to the filter.

Re: 56 Cameo build
Thanks for the update . That looks good.
I would have to make the bends tighter and modify the Cad air filter housing to get it to fit under the hood above the 5.3 truck manifold. Might even have to transition to an oval tube on top of the manifold to a tight carb hat upside down to the bottom of the Cad air cleaner. Ahh yes, food for thought. BTW how tall is your air filter element ?

Re: 56 Cameo build
Not to hijack this thread, but this might be a good place to show a few ideas.
I saw one of these air filters at a car show the other on the web.

Re: 56 Cameo build
I think the first one has some type of chiller system. Looking at the exhaust ... perhaps turbo charged & it'd be an intercooler of sorts ... possibly.

Re: 56 Cameo build
Working on my list of things to finish. Got the fuel lines made and installed. Not nearly as big of a job as I had pictured. I just need to measure and fit the flexible line to the fuel rail. Then I'm going to hook up the check engine light and fire up.
Mounted the drivers side rear view mirror today and was well pleased with the look. After using peep mirrors on my last project I knew I wanted something better and these will work. I'm building this for a driver, and you have to be able to see.

Re: 56 Cameo build
Thanks Kim. They're 944 Porsche mirrors I got off ebay for $100. A guy on this site with a red suburban sent me pictures of his so I went from there. Had to make a bracket for inside the door to mount them to and add a wedge to get the right angle. I will sandblast around where they swivel and smooth the seam with JB weld to make a cleaner look.

Give credit where credit is due. That was Highsider that turned me on to the Porsche mirrors.

I will post more pictures of the mirrors later. We took it back off to build the right side bracket.
