Re: My 72 gmc build

I would look in the security thread in the truck subforum, I saw a guy turn the cig lighter slot into a kill switch, I like that idea alot! It is inconspicuous, won't look out of place tok much.

Re: My 72 gmc build

I finally got my truck back from the mechanic yesterday. A couple weeks and a big bill later, I now have all new bearings and a new gearset in my rear end. But lo and behold, when I went to leave the house this morning, my wipers wouldn't work. They're stuck in the down position. The fuse is good, so my next guess is the switch. Would the switches just quit out of the blue on these old trucks?

Glad you got it back! Did you get the mud flaps on yet?

Re: My 72 gmc build

I did get a set of mudflaps on it. Now I need to either get a set to go in front of the wheels for or buy a set of underbody toolboxes. I'm not too fond of the idea of those freshly painted the cab corners getting beat up

Re: My 72 gmc build

I think tool boxes would do, just need to space them out a little from the cab and put a layer of rubber between the cab and boxes. I just never have enough room for tools and stuff in my truck, behind the seat just doesn't cut it.

Re: My 72 gmc build

I don't even have the choice of putting stuff behind the seats because of my buckets and center console

Re: My 72 gmc build

Toolboxes are a must have on a flatbed. As far as the kill switch is concerned, do you want it for security or battery saving purposes?

Re: My 72 gmc build

Both, actually. I'll be taking the tuck to college with me but I'll also have a car for occasional trips home, so the tuck might sit for a while. When it's sitting I don't want the battery to drain or someone to steel it

Re: My 72 gmc build

Here is the album of just 67-72 trucks. Enjoy.

About 200 of them went missing when photobucket went nuts, not sure what happened. I am trying to get them all back together, so there is a few duplicates.

well for some reason they are all doubled, not sure why

Re: My 72 gmc build

There are several battery kill switches out there. It takes a pretty heavy switch to use as a battery disconnect. Several of these could be mounted in an inconspicuous place under the dash. http://m.grainger.com/mobile/categor...rchFlag=Search My preference if it is going to set for a while is disconnect the battery, pull the rotor button and chain the hood shut.

Re: My 72 gmc build

So as of right now, I've been driving my truck consistently for a little over a week. It's incredibly loud in the cab because the headers are leaking and I still have to cover the old hole where my shifter went through, but all in all its a great set of wheels

For anyone who is considering getting a ranger overdrive: DO IT! I went from 9 mpgs to 13.5-14.5. I love the added gears and how the unit shifts. The only downside to the overdrive is the added gear whine. However, it's probably more noticeable in my truck due to the fact that I don't have anything but bare floors and hole in the transmission hump

Re: My 72 gmc build

I started thinking about one after seeing your build. Did the overdrive move the shifter back far enough that the seat gets in the way off reverse?

Re: My 72 gmc build

Sweet! I bet it was awesome getting to drive it again!

I am also interested in the overdrive, I would like to get 14 mpg out of one of these!

Re: My 72 gmc build

I'm not sure what the bench seat would be like, but the shifter clears my center console by about an inch when I'm reverse; there's plenty of clearance with 2nd and 4th gear

Re: My 72 gmc build

I will say though that my truck still likes to drink gas at 70 mph and above. 65 is a comfortable cruising speed with 4.10 gears and the way my motor is built

Haha not yet. I wouldn't have any hearing left. I'm going to wait until later this summer when I do a little more break work and get my interior finished

Re: My 72 gmc build

This kind of shows how much my shifter clears my console. You'd probably have to straighten it a little for the bench seat

Re: My 72 gmc build

Looks like I may need to do buckets! When I do my truck I will look look like a damn space ship! Shifter for the trans, shifter for the overdrive, twin stick for the t-case, then the pto lever! Best theft deterant, people won't know how to drive it! Plus the 4 pedals!

Just looked through the progress, the truck is very beautiful! Can't wait to see what is to come!

Re: My 72 gmc build

Thanks that_red_c10! I'm going to start on my interior pretty soon. All I'm going to worry about is the headliner and the carpet. I'm just going to throw some covers on the seats and go

Re: My 72 gmc build

Haha no problem! I'm beginning the slow restoration process on my 68' this summer, probably not going to get all that much done due to funds and space, but I'll do as much as I can!

I know where you're coming from. I wish I'd spread mine out more than I did. My checking account didn't need that much of a hit right now
