Can someone tell me when the motor is at top dead center on number one cylinder does the ignition rotor point towards the pulleys or the flywheel?

Removed the old oil filter adapter and mounted it on my new motor along with a new oil filter. Disassembled my old distributor and made a oil pump primer out of it. Worked great!

If release bearing comes in tomorrow the motor is definitely going in Tuesday.

your rotor should point to the number one plug, driver side, up front plug hope this helps.

For future reference, these are a good item to replace - the fiber washer can get a little wonky over time. Not required for a street engine, but not a bad idea for a performance engine.

Motor is in but probably won't start up tonight...we'll see.

Actually got it stabbed in pretty quick, I thought it was going to be more of a headache working alone today. Took about 15 minutes of positioning before I was ready to turn the first bolt.

Right now, just trying to button up everything from the underside. Clutch linkage, fuel line and power steering, then it's top side from there....

One last wrong part...I hope!!

What is this, I'm guessing it's a oil or water temp sensor? Screws into the block on the drivers side under the exhaust manifold. It's to small to screw into my new motor.

You can get a bushing to take it up to 3/4". If you look at the one in the picture, that sensor is actually much smaller but already has a bushing on it.
I would pull the old bushing off, and get one bushing that will take you from the small size to the larger size. If you put a bushing on the old bushing your temp sensor won't be reaching into the water jacket very far.

I pretty much knocked out all the hard stuff, I'm thinkin about 2 to 3 more hours of wrenchin and be on the road again (knock on wood). It will be tough keeping my foot off the throttle for break in! Can't wait!

Saturday is the big day! Tonight pretty much finished everything I could. I need to buy a new upper radiator hose and I'm still having problems finding the adapter for the coolant sensor. I have one more place to try for the adapter, if they don't have it I'll have to make something. Throttle linkage is to short, will also need modifying. I cranked it up for a few seconds just to see if it would fire, it fired right up. That's a good sign! Sorry, no pics to add, it was way to dark but I'll post some tomorrow. Stay tuned....

If you can't find that bushing you can always plug that hole for now. In town here I have had the best luck finding those bushings at Runnnings (farm supply), Ace Hardware, and Car Quest.

Edit: this is a DUMB idea, I hope you don't do it. Obviously you will want to know what the temp of your new engine is. I am not sure what I was thinking when I suggested you plug the hole.

You should be able to get a new sending unit at any auto part store. Just bring your old one with you so you know not to get the same size.

Update: Got it running no problem. Let it idle at 2000rpm (my neighbors hate me) like cratemotors.com said to in the break in instructions. Letting cool off a bit now.

Question, do I set the timing at idle or at a certain RPM? This is next to do on my list.

My temp senor didn't work, I will post why later tonight....

Right on man !!!!!....I would set your timing at idle speed with the dist vacuum disconnected and the hose plugged.

Do this at operating temp.

As far as break in, drive it normal. Don't baby it, but DO not race it either.

Accelerate moderately....also decelerateing from a high speed helps to seat the rings.

Engine look good....great job !!!!

Motor is done with the exception of a little tuning and putting the hood back on. It's been a stressful couple of weeks not having a ride! I'm glad it's over!

Reason for water sensor not working...when I was pulling the old motor I didn't notice the sensor and stretched the hell out of it. Need to figure out a new sensor and gauge, that dinosaur stuff needs to go!

Throttle linkage still needs to modified but I have time, won't be needing full throttle till break-in period is over. Will probably work on that tomorrow, This motor has way more cam then I thought it would. My old motor ran smooth as a top, I thought this one would too but it actually has a lumpy idle to it. I like it. Drove it a few miles tonight I can tell a big power difference, and I didn't even get in the throttle all that much! Also exhaust sounds good, alot better then it did before. Well, that's pretty much it...gotta say thanks again for everyones help! I'll post some better pics and video tomorrow...

wow, i just got mine back on the road. it was down at about the same time as you. i ended up replacing my mexican made 305 with a 283. it has a fresh rebuild and it was free. now i just ahve to get rid of my stupid powerglide. looking good though... its not as easy as it looks when you doing it all by yourself huh...
