Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
140 in a 1977 Pontiac engined Trans Am. It was still accelerating pretty smartly too, but I chickened out at that speed.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Over 140 in my Cobalt SS on a couple occasions, climb rate gets really slow at that point. Around the same speed in my cousin's 04 Tiburon V6 GT.
My truck is a good question, speedo is way off. It was pulling away quite easily from my cousin as he was topping 90 behind me after dealing with an annoying driver on the freeway. I try not to speed much more then 5 over anymore. Getting a 103 mph ticket in a 75 zone wasn't much fun....

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I've had the speedo on my '91 GMC come back up to 55. That's an indicated 135 or 140 (I'm too lazy to do the math right now). I figure with the slightly shorter than stock tires, I was closer to 120-125 maybe.
I had a '91 BMW 525i that I had up over 130 a few times. My '72 Plymouth Duster 340 I've buried the needle at 120 once or twice. I had my CTS to 132 a few months ago (GPS reading). And years ago my friend had an '87 Porsche 944 Turbo. We were racing a street bike and were doing over 160. |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
240km/h on my bike - just edged 200km/h in a car... yup I'm dumb - they were on public roads - with roos.
On the drag strip I held a record on my bike as the fastest bike for awhile - top speed 67km/h no helmet, wearing shorts and thongs. It was a new track and when the second bike went down it I lost the record still the story is all in the telling and if told right I was the track record holder on a bike once. I have now written on my windscreen "CHILL THERE IS PLENTY OF TIME" because of my road rage/speeding issues... helps me calm down. Rolling Stones croon "Time is on my side" through the iPod when I get extra antsy.

I should follow this by saying that I did not intend to brag earlier in the thread when telling my two high(ish)-speed stories. I simply told them in the spirit of sitting around telling stories. When I think back on it, I see that the idea that it was a deserted stretch of interstate didn't really mean that I wasn't dramatically increasing my chances for sudden death. I'm just thankful I lived through being young.

I have been watching for my kid to post in this,His own car/truck but I will still place a size 13 EEE in his backside.
I have a concern that some younger members may see some of these numbers and try to duplicate them |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
140 on the back of a Honda CBR1000XX, only through 3rd gear & had enough. My husband was piloting & we didn't have a kid yet, so figured why not if something happens at least we'd die together...we'll have fun or see Jesus...either way, it's all good
Yeah I know not a very "mature" perspective. But anyway, it was fun. I've been in several drag cars that pulled really hard, but this XX pulled so hard through the gears I could barely hold my hands gripped together around his waist. Wild how smooth & stable it was...it's a whole new world after 120!!!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
You and me both I am not tryin to say I have never done anything stupid too.. I survived and realized how my actions could had effected others. A few years back I lived in a house that had 16 accidents in less then a year in the yard. Moved for obvious reasons.. The house we have now is on a rural road, and is one of the only straight 1/4 mile country roads in our area ( most are curvy) The issue is it ends in a hairpin curve and is residential.
I have to agree with Dave as well. I hope the folks reading this realize that yeah its amazing to go balls out and see what you can do. Just do it on a track and not in the street where you can change someone elses life in a split second |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
x2. Everyday.
Me too. I have a 20 year old buddy with a V6 Mustang, and the other day he kept talking about top speed. A few years ago, I would have been like "Go let 'er rip and find out!" Now I find myself lecturing him about downforce, tire ratings, deer...I left that conversation wondering when I got so old -- and more to the point, how I ever lived to get that old.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Well let's put it this way when I going the speeds I was talking about, I did it either really late at night/early in the morning because I wanted to see what my cars/trucks could actually top out.. When I was going as fast as I was guessing I did in my 68, was not the safest but it was on an On ramp with hardly any traffic on the freeway... Now personally I hate going over 80 - 83 max because one I don't need to get another ticket and what is the point? But I will agree it is better go speeding on a track where it is in a controlled environment, however, I am not saying that seeing what your car can and cannot do is not a bad thing...
Cheers, Charlie

buddy of mine had a 78 trans am with a 400 when we were in high school and we use to fly down the road wide open in it at 130 mph plus. his dad always said it was like turning a monkey loose in a rocket ship, again I was a fool as a young man thought I was invincible and there wasn't anything I didn't know..............For all our younger members if you want to live to be an old member don't drive like a fool you might not be as fortunate as those posting in this thread.

Heartbeat, it sounds like you are wise at a young age. Be careful that wisdom doesn't make you sound like you are preaching at people who are essentially saying the same thing you are. It's not smart, it's not safe, and when we look back on it, we regret it (at least some of us do). Do you not have anything that you've lived to regret? Red, well put.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Doing stupid things is part of the learning curve called life. With that said, I had my 72lwb running 155mph. Pretty hot small block th350 and a 3.07 gear.Turning 5500rpm in 3rd gear with a 29 inch tire. Speedo was buried and the truck was just gliding along. Did a lot better than i thought it would. It would accidentally run 100mph with the 3.07 gear

125-30 in my 1972 Monte Carlo, with a state cop chasing me for 10 miles, my buddy screaming like a woman in the passenger seat. Outran the cop, but not his radio. Not one of my smartest moves, but unforgettable. At 94,xxx miles, the Monte was never the same.
