Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

It looks like you can install a pickup tach in a standard small truck cluster case. The mounting stands are in the cluster case for mounting the frame of the tach. You would need to cut a hole for the wiring plug to pass thru the back of the case. So it looks like you can use an LMC tach in a regular cluster housing.

The big truck tachs need the matching case, as they are different regarding the fuel gauge.

Most 80s camaros had the tach with the gas gage in them. From what I've read in other threads.

not sure about the later years but
the non-Tach won't have the correct paths to run the gas,
but should be able to wire it tho
and switch a couple of wires to work

I can't find anything on that part number, but the pics help me TREMENDOUSLY. My truck is an electric speedo and between those pics and some others from ebay, I think I may be able to make a factory gauge work.

I wish I could find a 5k tach with fuel gauge but it's looking like the only way I'm going to get an oem gauge is to do the 4k, which doesn't bother me that much, the time my BBC sees between 4000 and 5200 is going to be nearly non-existent, and with 4000rpm at the end of the sweep, I'll be able to see a more pronounced sweep with the change in RPM. (such as the converter is unlocking when it shouldn't be, etc).

I suppose the other option is to go with the aftermarket gauge, but the fact that it's stamped plastic makes my skin crawl.

not a fan of plastic either
in fact my black cluster overlay with mine is plastic, and can't tell installed,
it's been said here the plastic gauge dosn't look plastic when it's installed
i think the dual gauge you have to chop out the lower lights, belts and brake?

Yes, the dual gauge you need to chop out the brake and the belt, which doesn't really bother me. What about where the fuel gauge will go in the bottom left? What kind of "idiot lights" are there in a 91 and could you even make a fuel gauge work there?

I suppose I could also get the LMC steel gauge, and install an auxiliary fuel gauge in one of the spots on my A-pillar. That would allow me to use a gauge with a red LED that shows when nearly empty and would almost surely be much more accurate than the factory fuel gauge... I'd probably need to sacrifice my oil temp or AFR gauge though.

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

LMC lists the small fuel gauge as only fitting up to 1980, but the picture shows they are both 81-87 styles.

Items # 5 & 6. Its easier to see in the print catalog.

Also, not 100% those would bolt into a standard cluster case, but it does appear the mounts are the same as a clock. So if a clock mounts in any cluster, then so will the LMC fuel gauge.

As for wiring, its simple enough to solder 3 wires to the printed circuit traces and run them across the cluster to the fuel gauge.

I'm leaning toward going exactly this way. I can make it completely factory looking, then use my laptop for data monitoring only when I need it...
