The truck was stretched 4 feet it has a wheel base of 205". Before I cut the dovetail off the bed was a total of 17 feet. 12 foot flat and 4 foot of dovetail. I will be adding one foot to the flatbed as the rear of the frame sticks out past the bed 10 inches. When it is all said and done the bed will be 13 feet log and when I add the dove tail it should be 18 feet and maybe a inch or two. With the 17 foot bed I was able to fit a single cab long bed truck on it. Now with the extra foot, 18 feet or so I should just be able to fit a extended cab long bed on it and have a few inches to spare.

Here is what I have so far of the rear extension I am reusing some of the railing on the rear it is welded to a mix of chrome moly and dom tubing from other projects its all 1.75 120 wall. the plan is to use 1.50 inch pins to hold on the dovetail at the top. the bottom will slide into the receiver on the bumper hitch I made.

The outer parts of the extension of the bed is shorter than the 4 inner extensions, I am hoping it will help distribute the load of the dovetail instead of all the weight being on the bumper hitch.

I also replaced the rear brake line I could not front one the same length one that was on it I ordered 2 but they were too short. I ended up making me own brake line I ended up ordering a 18 inch 3an brake line and a male and female 3an to 7/16-24 adapters and a 7/16-24 t fitting so I could get the correct length line.

Welded on nuts for the license plate and reverse lights. the brake lights are screwed on.

I was hoping to make it out of 11 gauge but I ended up getting laid off last month when my work reopened. So I ended up using a piece of 14 gauge. the piece is not very big and the bend at the bottom of the corners should give it enough strength.

Finally installed the grill. I was having a problem with my turn signals I could not get them to flash. It turned out the relay was wired backwards when I wired up the fuse box. thankfully it was an easy fix unfortunately it took me a month of trying different things to figure it out.

Work on the truck has been slow I have been having hip problems. I ended up having hip surgery and the beginning of october. So I am just now getting back to working on the truck. But Before we get to the truck I built myself a santa maria grill for our fire pit back at the end of september.

If it makes a difference I used some of the metal from the truck to build the grill.

I also picked up a 12 gallon air tank as my 3 gallon tank is not enough for my front 5k each bags. I also ordered another 5.65 CFM air compressor, but its on backorder.

I also picked up a set of new shoes for the front of the truck, they are 19.5x 6 I wanted to run 20s for the tires but they are all ugly. I got a really good deal on one of them it was a return. I also got a decent deal on the second but it's slightly different its the same wheel but newer and the center bore is 1mm bigger and the lug holes are not chamfered. That said they require Flange Nut lug nuts so it doesn't matter. But I am going to have a set of center caps cut to fit them they will be cut out of 3/8 aluminum plate and I will polish them and depending on how close they get to my measurements they should be press fit. I don't like the large center caps that bolt on the out side to the lug nuts and I cant find any they fit a 4.59" Center Bore.

I took a gamble on the tires I wanted a set of open shoulder all seasons steer tires for the front of the truck. I could only find 3 that fit that and the other two were more of a mud tire that a all season. But the other two where name brand and I have never heard of Otani. regardless they should be better than the tires they are replacing with a date code of 1993. That said its impressive that tires from 93 hold 80 psi. and hulled a 6500lbs tractor.

Well I also decided to delete the factory heater the turbo touches it, and just from driving it around the yard in low gear it has put a hole in the heater box that and I am afraid it will catch fire once I start driving it on the road. I ordered a vintage air 506101 Compact Heater with Defrost. it should be in wednesday. I also ordered a vintage air heater delete plate a while back when I was planning on just ordering the heater/ ac box from vintage air. but realized I would still need to order the controls and the defrost would not work with out the a/c. One day I plan on installing a/c but I dont have the money for that right now. I am selling a few things to save up for a custom set of gauges.

I drilled and tapped the manifold for a egt gauge while I had the turbo off. the other side already had been drilled and taped for a egt gauge but now that I have flipped the manifold I need one on this side because you need the egt gauge to read from the rear 3 cylinders as they run hotter.

My custom gauges came in today! The are NVU New Vintage USA gauges. in order Gps speedo, Coolant temp/ Oil PSI, 4k diesel tachometer. Boost gauge, Battery voltage, Fuel level and a EGT gauge.

The new gauges are great. I am not a diesel guy so this might be a dumb question.... What kind of boost is typical for your set up? The range on the gauge is higher than I expected.

Also, is that a Fiero fastback roof in the corner?

Thanks! I should only be making 36-40 pis of boost on the current turbo but I plan on going compound turbos at some point, but I still will only be making 50 to 70 psi max i just want to leave room to grow if I ever need to.

The roof is for the Porsche 911. I had a 1970 911E rust bucket. But I bought a targa tub to build instead so the roof is going on the targa tub at some point.

Jarrod, very nice work on your truck! Those gauges are sweet! I wish DD would have done custom gauges when I ordered my VHX cluster in my orange truck. Oh well. You will be able to defrost with out AC. It may just take a little longer. My orange truck has no AC hooked up and on certain wet snowy high humid days it is a pain but I just crack the windows a bit and it helps. I like those wheels too. The bed is taking shape quite nicely as well. Keep up the great work.

Thanks!, I was planning on getting a set of Dakota Digital RTX gauges, however after months of thinking about it and what it would cost. I decided to go with custom gauges as I would have had to buy different BIM Expansion modules to add boost and diesel tachometer signal converter. and I would still have to buy a standalone egt gauge. That and I could not get past the 8k tachometer. The cost ended up being the same as if I went with the DD gauges. One day I will have a/c but for know this will work for me. I'm really happy with the wheels but I will be a while before I can afford the rears. That and I plan to swap the rear axle to a dana s111 axle out of a dodge 4500/5500, its rated at 14,500lbs it uses a 10 lug bolt pattern. So I have to wait until I can afford the axle swap and the wheels and tires. I just hope my current set of rear tire last until then.

I am finally able to start on the exhaust. I ordered the tubing V bands a stuff before I had my hip sugary I am just now getting to where I can get down and back up that I am able to install the exhaust. I'm using 4 inch stainless tubing.

Thanks, I have been considering having some one make a cnc overlay for the gauge/switch panel. That way I can easily change it up if I ever need to add something or reagange it. I'm happy with how the heater control panel turned out.

I bought a new under bed box off ebay. I know you get what you pay for. But I was not expecting it to be so thin. it's made of 18 gauge aluminum. Its 48W,17T,16D the battery fits in it perfectly.

Those compressors can really generate some heat. I would keep an eye on how hot it gets in that sealed box.

I don't think they should get too hot between the three of them they make a little over 13 cfm and it's only a 12 gallon tank. So day to day they won't run long enough to get hot. The only time the should ever have to run very long is if I ever end up needing to use a air tool. But I will keep an eye on them.

Thanks! I want it to be able to do a little bit of everything.

Well I started on the box I layed out everything I was planning on installing the box behind the cab on the driver side. So I drilled all my holes installed rive nuts and started mounting and wiring everything up. Then I thought I need to install the new gas tank as I need to put a hole in the back of the cab as I wand to use the stock fuel fill. I was planning on using the 40 gallon suburban tank and have it in the middle of the frame behind the cab but I wrote the measurements down wrong. the tank was to tall to fit where I was planning on putting it. And as big as my truck is I had nowhere else to put it as the only other place it would have fit was where I was putting the air tank. So I had to find a new fuel tank. I started looking at semi tanks I was hoping to find a 40-50 gallon tank. But all the 40 to 50 gallon tanks had a diameter of 25-26 inches but my bed from the out side of the frame to the outer edge of the bed was only 26 inches and from the underside of the bed to the bottom of the frame rail is only 21 inches so I had to settle on a smaller tank I ended up getting a really good deal on as 33 gallon tank with brackets its from a 2006 Nissan UD2000. its 16x40.

Now to the bad news I drilled 30 some holes in the box to mound the battery and compressors and everything else I needed for it but Now I need to mound the box on the passenger side and I needed to move the battery to the other side of the box as the battery cable would be to long but now I have to move everything to the other side of the box so I can still have space to store stuff in it.

Looks like the project is coming along nicely.

Just a side note, I used to fabricate trailers professionally and those short rails you removed from the sides of the bed are usually added to give the outer bed rails extra strength to resist bending under load.

With yours being home built it may be over built with larger tubing than needed and not need these secondary rails.

If you do need them you may run into some deflection caused stress cracking of the tubing adjacent to the welds where the outriggers attach back to the main rails over the truck frame. Watch out for this.

Thanks, Are you talking about the side rails? I will keep an eye on them. But I don't think the guy that build the bed intended the side rails to distribute the load. The rails may have especially where the bead meets the dove tail, but the guy that built the bed said him and one of his buddy built it in his backyard. They did not do a very good job. its straight and the inner and outer rails are almost square but the side supports and cross rails are not square, and the frame slopes up in the rear where they extended it just over an inch. That said the bed is made out of 1.5x3 3/16 wall tubing. I have considered adding a side rail back to it but it would be attached directly to the bed rails turning the 1.5x3 into the 1.5x4.5 I have also thought about adding another set of outriggers as well but i'm in the middle of adding more weight to the bed I don't know how heavy it will get.

I started on the side skirts they will sit flush with the cab they sit 5 inches in and have will have a two inch lip. they will hide the tank and side boxes.

I'm enjoying your build! It probably wasn't on your radar, but the side skirts are great for pedestrian and bicyclist safety. If something were to occur, however unlikely, you are less likely to have someone's kid get sucked under the rear tires and die.

Another side benefit is improved mileage (small percentage).

I did consider the possible gas mileage benefit and wanted to protect the gas tank. But I had not thought about things getting sucked under the truck.

The front bumper was in the way so I decided to install it, I don't know if i'm going to get a new one or not. I thought about painting it white as the chrome is peeling off but it matches the look. I bought a set of fog lights as its a 71-72 bumper. They look ok but I hate how the mount.

Thanks, Well if my body would quit falling apart, I would have had it finished by now lol, back surgery 2019, 2020 hip surgery, now getting a full hip replacement in a month or so don't have a date yet, with my luck I'll have to have a knee done next year lol. at the moment I am only able to work 2-3 hours a day at most before I can no longer stand. I will probably be down a few months between the surgery and physical therapy. So i'm hoping to get this side done so I can get started on the other side so I can get the truck out of the garage before my surgery.


I picked up a front plate I was looking for something period correct, it's close but its a 90s remake. I was hoping it was steel but its aluminum. It's a bit to nice I was hoping to scratch it up a little and have it rust and make it match the truck but idk.

That said some of the metal showed up for the sides. i'm skinning the sides in 18 gauge aluminum as at the moment its cheaper than 18 gauge steel. metal prices are way up. 2 years ago I bought some 18 gauge steel 24x48 sheet for $28 its now $63.

I was going to use the old side box door skin, but when I striped it all the way down it had a ton of pitting.
