The V12 project needs to be postponed due to family illness in Az.
All prayers and good thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Sitting in Az.
Health issues stable, so leaves time to think about project. Good therapy. I'm thinking of using the crewcab frame & running gear, maybe need to shorten it some. Use the 9' flatbed from the yellow truck. Maybe add tool boxes under it. Trying to get a Western hauler look. Do our best not to raise the truck any higher than a typical one ton, even lower it just a tad. I'm not a young as I used to be. Use the '62 gmc front clip and cab. Extend the hood and rear of fenders BACK 24-26" and mount the cab 24-26" back giving room for all the engine to be under the extended hood. That would allow the cab to remain stock, tranny in conventional location and the engine could all be seen with hood up. I'm trying to picture that combo, but seems fairly easy to accomplish. I wish I could get a picture in my mind of what that long low critter would look like. What's the flaws in this line of thinking both mechanically and over-all appearance? When it's finished to be as safe mechanically as the '97. It's easy to see alot of you guys ideas is coming into play here. Thanks, Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Do you have any dead-on side shot pics of the truck? If so, I can come up with something crude to maybe help visually. It wouldn't be professional- I use MS Paint, and have no idea how to do the things the photoshop wiz's do. It'd be similar to what I've done with my pics in the Truck-Ouside-The-Box thread.

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Man, Storm-Chaser, I'd appreciate that.
I don't have any pic straight from the side of them, but as soon as I get home, I'll get some. When I worked on the other projects in the past, I'd buy a model, paint, change, and fiddle with it 'til I got what I wanted, then sit it on a shelf in the shop. Made a good incentive to keep going when I would get stumped. Thanks for the offer, Cayoterun

I've been wanting to do the same thing for my project, but I can't seem to find any Kodiak/Topkick models.

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
think it would look better sitting in the bed , just put it in reverse with the gearbox autobox facing forwarth (autobox would be best i think ) the run it throuch a 4x4 splitbox and from there a driveline back to the rearaxle , you need to have an offset axle or a chaindrive from the driveline too the axle but the rest you should be able to find in bits and pieces on the junkyard you could place the engine a little higher so it would sit over the rearaxle so it doesnt need to get intoo the cab itself but just sits against it , you allso would have the enginebay wideopen to put the radiators the propanetanks and all the other stuff in to keep the engine healthy

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Just what I needed to see. Could you put a western hauler flat bed on it with running boards? White paint/w a chrome stripe down the belt line? It is the over-all profile I was trying to picture. You hit the nail right on the head.
Looks like I could have ruptured a disc in my back while here in Az, but should know more tomorrow. Explains the need for running boards. For some reason, that reminds me of the "Flintstone" truck from the comic strip. That's fine with me. It would sure be something ---?different? No idea or suggestion has been thrown out. This is just a direction I could go with existing parts and trucks available locally at home. Been playing with frame lengths while here and it looks like a 155.5" x-cab frame might be the length we would need for this. I'm now leaning toward using the 168.5" frame, mount engine, driveline, cab & front clip, then cutting the frame to length that works best. This back thing has sure thrown us a curve, but a problem I've dealt with for years, just a big pain in the rear as well as back. Thanks for your trouble. Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
those trucks look like they been pulled to hard when they where stuck in the mud
on the other hand i think you could get the nose about 5 inch or so shorter cause the front part is only for the radiator you might be able to move these a bit to make room forwarth the second part of the v12 sits against the front part witout a cranksnout or pump or pullies so it should be able to fit in a bit less room then 2 v6's would occupy

Get a toy of the Transformer Ironhide. It's a Topkick crewcab.

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
But it's the wrong bodystyle. The Transformer truck is the latest Topkick bodystyle, I'm messing with the 88-98+ style.

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Your dead on what I had in mind. That is getting printed off. The straight flatbed is what I have. The toolboxes or skirts on this pic gets the profile I was hoping for. The overall look, (kinda work worn) is also what I was hoping for. I'd like my sheetmetal to all be straight, the bed in good shape, but not with a real fancy paint job. Just something presentable.
I was wanting to camo the engine with a stock body of some sort. I don't think anyone would notice the 7 foot long hood, do Ya'll?? (grin) Back deal still about the same. With today being a holiday, we may have trouble finding a Dr's office open. We just want some potent pain pills. Our youngest son may bring my wife's Expedition so she can haul me in the back and he could take the truck and trailer back. My wife's sis has come to replace us here with our bro-in-law. Thanks to all of you, This is a great place to hang out. Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
I really like the looks of that goofy looking thing. We set out to do something different, and that sure makes a good canidate for consideration. If the frame was a little longer with a longer bed so the cab would set about half way between the axles, it might look a little more balanced. The bed I have is 9' long.
I just now noticed you had stretched the front of the old pickup I have. I'm thinking I like to paint it back to the color it was when new. I feel pretty confident I can do all the work at home except the sheetmetal to stretch the hood and fenders. I've never done much body work. I do have another pickup just like this one, so have two of everything. The idea of burying the motor in the bed keeps nagging at me too. Found a Dr., got some pills, so right now, I don't give a flip whether it hurts or not. No driving tho, so son is leaving Okla. tonight with the wifes Expedition for us to go home in and he'll take the truck and trailer. I'll think about trying to find the cause of this after we get back to our familiar turf. Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
Home, sweet home!
Son & friend got back to Ok this morning early/w truck & trailer. They tripped it straight out and back non stop. They turned 1,600mi in 35hrs. Spent about 4 hrs on that end with his uncle. Wife didn't push too hard coming back. I laid in the back and popped pills. I told her with all this easy living, It might take a while for me to get over this. She told me not to push it too far. I want to thank all of you for your prayers and good thoughts during this time. I'll start trying to find the cause of this back deal now we're home, but keep the bro-in-law in your thoughts. All those long nosed truck pics offered are really neat and thanks, memphismatt, for doing that. Stopped on the way home where the crew-cab is, and made arrangements with the guys I bought it from to shorten the frame, but after we got the motor, tranny, and '62 cab mounted. The owner of the brown '62 pickup gave me the title, and current tags for it. I'm now the proud second owner of a '62 GMC. Looks like I'm getting a long ways from the original title of this topic, but plan for the '91 crew-cab frame to be under our GMC, even if we do modify it's length to what we need. Sometime in the future, That crew-cab and front clip may be for sale if someone needs it. It's not a bad rust free old cab & clip. Dash has been pretty well stripped out and it don't have any power. It's a cheapie work truck. I even like the pic with the pickup bed and single wheels. Lots of choices. Thanks, Cayoterun

Re: GMC V-12 powered '91 Chev crewcab
I bet it feels good to be home! Hope you are getting the pain under control. I was just lookin on the map, I'm only 100 miles or so from you right now. I'm sitting in a motel room in Garden City Ks. Work sent me here to fix electrical problems on 3 trucks we sold to a millright co. The trucks won't be back to their shop till 6pm, so I'm killin time. I plan to have all 3 done before they need them at 7am Friday.
Too bad I'm driving a Taurus (rental). Otherwise I'd ask you to hook me up with one of those little economy engines to take home with me

When I look at the elongated GMC, my brain goes into overload. I'm trying to think of a term to describe it, but right now the only thing that comes to mind is a Duckbilled Platypus.

Here's another pic that the friend who gave the V-12 badges sent me of his thoughts. The tank or whatever would be removed, but it gives us another good profile.
He restored the V-12 truck that's in the 6066GMC gallery. Thanks, Bob Cayoterun

The red one is my favorite. I don't know if it's the step side or the angle of the picture but it just doesn't look as wrong proportionally as some of the other pics.
