Yeah, she runs like a raped ape....just leaving some smoke behind her. I'm almost positive my rings have seen the end of days. Definitely nothing to do with the Vortec swap other than upping the compression on 40 year old rings.

I call it a success, really wish that the bottom end was a bit fresher. So Vortec heads will fit a small bore 283/307 without issue. They can be made to accept a higher lift without machining, although I recommend having them machined if you have them off and disassembled. My calibrated booty says that the seat of your pants gain is well worth it.

Here's a link to the tool needed to machine the valve spring seat at home. You'll also need an arbor to perform this task.

I'm looking at similar methods you used on the 307 and how they'll work on a 305. These engines are cheap and readily available unlike the 307s......Haven't seen one in years at the junkyards.

Yes that tool cuts the spring seat and guide diameter for your spring and pos. stop seals, but it does not cut down the guide height to increase clearance between the retainer and guide....

I would use the 4718 though as it cuts the seat to 1.44, the standard size needed to run springs with dampers.

An additional tool (4726) is needed for that...

Both tools and the arbor (4732) run around 105.00 total plus shipping.

I chose to go the route I did because my heads were already installed, making the machining option impossible.

Wish I could Ryan... the old 307 just couldn't handle the increased compression and started pulling oil past the rings.... never quit running and always fired on the first hit and purred like a kitten... I'm gonna miss it

Age, and abuse... So when we pulled it down there was NO babbit left on any bearings, the crank had deep grooves in the journals, The block had deep grooves in all eight cylinders. Basically rode hard and put away wet. Funny thing is she ran like a champ til the day I pulled her out....BUT, I couldn't justify the expense of all the machine work and parts to put it back together the right way....

about 2 months ago i bought a 71 lwb to use some parts for my 72.the 71 had a 307 that had been rebuilt about27 years ago i was going to put back in the 72 because the 72 came with the 307.the 307 tuned up great and held great oil pressure cold but when it gets warm it drops to about 7-8 psi.haven't put gauge on it but i know its low. just wondering what evryones opionion is.have not changed oil yet going to in a couple days.

the reason i asked is the 72 came with 307 3ott father in law bought the truck new,we changed to 400 sb in 1988.just wondering if to put 307 back in for originality or keep 400 since the blocks looks alot alike. kinda like to stay close to original. also when repainting would you use new or real clean original stuff. long story short we done what we wanted with the truck then but since he passed away in 2000 me and the wife has started to redo it to original. thanks guys. still drive and show it every time we get the chance on the weekends

Wow, sorry to hear about the rings givin up the ghost.... Was really int ereste in hearin how the 307 did. We are in the process of building a 350 that is VERY similar. All of which is on a budget... Bought a 350 10-20 4 bolt bored oout to .040 over. Had it line honed, freze plugs etc.... steel crank, flat top pistons, Erson 292 grind cam, 193 heads machined to accomidate bigger lift, performer intake for the vortec style heads. Serpentine set-up mod. Points distributor. Holley 700 DP.

All of this I picked up during the last year and a half. I have $100 in the block, $125 in the heads, $150 in the machine work, $590 in the rest. So for around $1000 we will see what she will do this weekend. Thw machine shop guy was suprised and thought it was a good combo. He suggested the cam said it would do a really good job with the heads. Thought the combo would go over 375hp. Here are some pics.

We are going to fire it off today. We will see.

I highly suggest getting a set of true 062 or 096 Vortec heads from Skoggins Dickey, GMPP or the local wrecker. I have 3 sets now and am very impressed with the performance gains that they made on that lil 307.... if she had not been soooo far gone I probably would have built her again for something down the road....

I agree. There seems to still be come confusion that just being a center bolt valve cover head makes them Vortec heads. Not so. Those heads are just swirl port TBI heads. The '96-'02 Vortec heads perform much better. The downside, is you will need a different intake. The Vortec intake is bolted to the heads with 8, 5/16" bolts.

Here is the latest Vortec build, a warmed over L31 my son and I are building for his senior project.... As a matter of fact all the new components I had installed into the lil 307 went into this build....Cam, heads, intake, Timing chain, carb etc.

I hate the 307 played out. I geared up for the same type of build on my 307. I thought my 68 bottom end was in better shape than it turned out to be. I had to scrap that plan and go in another direction.

Nice looking engine you're building with your son. That's good that he has an interest in something like that. What is this engine going in?

I've never really gotten a good look at a Summit brand intake. In these pics it looks like it is of nice quality. What is your hands on opinion of them? I just assumed they were junk like the Professional Products intakes.

Thanks, I stole the L31 full roller I built from my wife's '67 Chevelle so this is the replacement for it.... It is quite a bit milder then its predecessor.

I am very happy with it, the Summit intakes are made by Weiand and are identical in every aspect, casting, machine work, design..... The pistons are Summit re-branded Silvo-lite hypers by Keith Black. With a true 1.560 compression height they are great for a budget build street motor.

I know what you mean.....I have a Pro Products intake and it took tons of work to get it to fit right... basically I polished a turd.

You should talk to Txfirefighter he was the one that originally informed me about how Summit re-brands products with their name and sells them at a discount....

I knew it! I had heard somewhere that the summit intakes were weiand, but didn't want to speak up last night because I couldn't confirm it. From what I've researched, most of the summit brand parts are made by respected manufactures. So when I can I buy summit to save a few $$.
