Re: Great deal on new crate engine

No problem on the thread jack. I talked with a guy at Northern Tool this morning and he said he planned on ordering one today as well for his 88 K10 project

From what I understand, to get the full 12yr 36K warranty you have to put it in a vehicle that originally had a tree fiddy in it. That means for us 67/68 guys we get screwed and only get the 1 year 12 month warranty because 350's weren't installed in trucks until '69. However, I guess I could argue I pulled a 350 out and am replacing it... I don't think it matters. As long as it doesn't blow in the first couple months, I'll probably only put 10K on it before the 3 years would be up anyway. I used to put 5 to 6K/yr on the truck, but now that I have the 65 Mustang, they split the mileage now.

Also, the 260 horsepower is an assumed power.

From Jegs:

http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet+Perf...67353/10002/-1

Quote:
This universal 350ci engine uses a brand new block and can be used as a replacement for most GM vehicles from 1973-85. It produces 260 HP and 350 ft/lbs torque with a 4-bbl carb and headers. It can be used as a replacement or as a retrofit into almost any vehicle. This new 350 crate engine comes with a GM warranty and is covered for 3 years or 100,000 miles in applicable GM vehicles only. JEGS has the GM Goodwrench Chevy 350 for sale at a great price!
Specifications
4-bolt main with 2-piece rear main seal
Cast iron crankshaft
LT1/LT4 powdered metal connecting rods
Cast pistons (dished)
Hydraulic flat tappet cam (.383''/.401'' and 112° lobe separation)
Cast iron cylinder heads with 76cc chambers
8.5:1 compression ratio
Block is compatible with left or right side oil dipstick (Requires Plug for Unused Side - Plugs are Included)
4-quart oil pan
Timing tabs for a 6-3/4'' or an 8'' balancer
Recommended spark plug: Accel #111-0574-4 or any spark plug with 14mm .460'' reach, 5/8'' hex, tapered seat, projected tip
Not Intended for Marine Use.
JEGS Easy Kits are designed by the experts at JEGS to ensure quick and easy installation.
So you need to start off with a 4 barrel and headers just to get the 260 hp rating. So, not much to be gained with anything else. Mine will have stock rams horns and an edelbrock performer intake and carb I've been saving.

Didnt even notice that little caveat. I definitely will not be running headers, I will be running ram horns like you. Regarding carb/intake, I have been looking at the 2023 combo (edelbrock single quad 1813 800cfm thunder series carb & 7101 intake)

Also, I am assuming that this engine would have no problem getting my 4.10s rolling in the back. Is that a safe assumption?

I'm not an engine builder or very knowlegeable about carbs but I'm betting an 800cfm carb is going to be WAY too big for a 260HP 350. I'm running a Edelbrock 1406 600cfm on the one in the Burb and it's doing a great job of pulling that old boat around....

I agree. My mild 350 came with a 750 double pumper which was way too much carb for my application. I went to a 650 Street Avenger and am happy with it.
A 600 would be perfect for that setup.

Thanks for refocusing my search Loc & Sicklajoie. I will readust my focus. Either way I would want a 4bbl, right?

Yeah...thats a great deal on a good motor and I fully agree you couldn't build one for that kind of pricing!...let alone get a 3 year warranty!
It will be interesting to see if they start up a discount for the higher hp offerings (ie: 290hp, etc)....maybe if they realize the massive spike in sales?
To my understanding that motor is the equivalent in its spec (cam/pistons/compression/etc) to the stock 350's that came in these trucks in '71/72.
That gives them to my understanding the 260hp gross/195hp net rating. I believe....similar to the way they used to rate hp and engines coming out of the 60's and then of course the change in 1971 to Net hp.
That said, that is still a great power plant for these trucks and I fully agree that it will more than provide some nice torquey low end power and grunt.
The addition of a good intake (performer), carb, ignition and exhaust will wake it up nicely for some great DD use.
My two bits and Great choice!!

With a 4.10? You'll be able to roast your back tires if you wanted to.

Got my shipping info, it's coming via R&L carriers... never heard of them before, had this info:

Quote:
This shipment is in transit and requires an appointment. A Customer Care representative will be contacting the Consignee 24 hours prior to delivery. Please note, Appointment, Residential, and COD Shipments may require additional days for service.
It weights 444lbs with whatever it's being shipped on.

I take it that I have to be home then when they deliver it... crap. We're stupid busy at work.

Thanks for the pics Leon! So you DID order one too then?

It's a common misperception that a 2bbl carb gets better fuel mileage than a 4bbl carb, while that can be true, what's typical is that 2 barrels have larger jets (squirt more fuel) than the 4bbl primary jets (the two it's actually running on until you mash the go pedal and all 4 open) so as long as you keep your foot out of it and keep the secondaries closed for the most part (which for most everyday driving is very possible to use them minimally) you can get better fuel mileage with a 4 barrel, so yes, you want a 4 barrel You definitely won't see that 260hp number with a 2 barrel.

Also, 2 and 4 barrels use different intakes anyway!

Has anyone NOT PAINTED one of these motors? I always see them painted in the trucks I see for sale/shows, etc. I like the black, and I don't want to paint it. How well does it hold up? They look to be well painted in all of the "just got my motor" pics I've seen.

Yes, I ordered one from this sale. It will be here next week.

The one pictured above I bought about 2 years ago. I ended up putting it in the '69 Suburban. I have just over 3000 miles on it and it runs great and always starts on the first revolution... I did not paint it, I left it Black and so far it is holding up good.

See I wanted to know if I could paint it and still have the warranty. So this answers my question, looks like I can paint orange over the black and still be valid. So that's good.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Jesse

I have the same engine I just put in my 83. Originally it was for the 70, but ended up here. It is equipped like you are talking about. Edelbrock 1406, Performer and stock HEI. I put Headman Headers on mine so there was less issue with plug wires.

Make sure (if you don't already) you run the Edelbrock Divided Heat Insulator (EDL-9266) between carb and manifold. My carb doesn't like heat.

My engine came with both the 2 o'clock and the 12 o'clock timing tab. I used the 2 ''clock tab and I used this balancer
Professional Products 80000 PowerForce Street Damper (PRP80000)

I also used these plugs (shorties) to help with header clearance.
ACCEL 8199 U-Groove Spark Plug - 8 Pack of #0576S

With my T350C, 2.76 gears...I can light up the tires (OK tire) without hardly trying. IT runs real strong. To me it is a great combo for the drivers we do with our two beasts

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

On my 290 HP crate motor I think we had to use plugs off the bottom of my old engine ,I believe they were in the water jacket area ,does this sound right ? I think we even had to pull the part the oil filter screws onto from my old motor ,I would like to just buy these parts if anyone knows exactly what they are called as I want to leave the old motor intact . By the way ,I have put well over 50,000 miles on my wife's 72 malibu convertible with the 290 HP crate motor with no problems whatsoever .

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Thanks Bill! Looks like that balancer will work for me, and a pretty good price. I think I found the flywheel I need too, but there's two different tooth counts, and I don't want to replace the starter too... may need to wait until the motor is pulled.

I love the way men shop.....no foolin' around, just git 'er done. LOL

....I wonder how many of these motors they have??

After this sale JEGS should offer all the board members engine discounts given the sales the website generated for them

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Did you not see the post above mine? He got two already

They're supposedly located in OH, whether or not that's where the motors are shipped from, I don't know.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

Took 4 days to get both. Had them sent to my shop on a truck. Might take more for home shipping.

Re: Great deal on new crate engine

I've never ordered a crate motor before and am thinking about getting one of these for a future project. I live on a culdesac and it would be difficult for a big rig to deliver to my residence. Any experience with this?

Do you have a friend or a local business they could deliver it to. You could just meet them there with a pickup and slide it from the liftgate into the back of the pickup.

Just a thought...
